Robin Williams left a legacy of laughter when he passed away in 2014. I grew up loving every movie he starred in so I felt as though a part of my childhood changed when I found out he died. I’m not able to watch his movies without being reminded of his tragic suicide. His death impacted me even though I have never met him. However, I felt as though I knew him through the characters he played in my favourite movies. Like other celebrity deaths, people are effected, even fascinated, by them. But why? Maybe it’s because we become so attached to the characters they play that they become apart of us. We view some of them as gods, like they’re better than everyone and everything including death. It never crosses my mind that an older celebrity will die before me. For instance, I assumed Robin Williams would continue making movies until I had children of my own. I forgot that he was mortal like everyone else. Although Bill Nye is still alive and well, he is like Robin Williams and every other celebrity; he is capable of death. The stories in the media about a celebrity who goes through a hard time such as an addiction, make that celebrity easy to relate to. For instance, Robert Downey Jr. battled a drug addiction. Those who also struggled with an addiction will relate to Robert Downey Jr. more than those who hasn’t. This is the same for any celebrity with any situation. We think we know celebrities because we can relate to them through the stories we hear in the media. This makes their deaths harder on those who looked up to them or related to them. The death itself can be relatable. For instance, my best friend tried to commit suicide a few years ago, and thankfully did not succeed. Robin Williams cause of death was suicide so it hits close to home. The death of Robin Williams increased awareness of depression and suicide. He was a man who was said to always make jokes. No one realizes someone can be very depressed when they’re always smiling in your presence. This caused people to realize that there are other signs of depression and wanting to commit suicide.
