Most of us wake up in the morning and carry out our daily routines of getting ready and preparing ourselves for the day ahead of us, or the things of this world. Richard Wilbur’s poem takes into consideration the things that happen before our alarm clock rings, waking us in a foggy daze. If our souls can cling on to a world full of floating angels, why bother waking up and getting out of bed in the first place? As Richard Wilbur suggests in the title of his poem, the answer is love. Love can motivate us to do all sorts crazy of things. We compromise even when we don’t feel like it and sacrifice things we otherwise wouldn’t all for love. Perhaps we get up every morning to endure all the things of this world for the simple act of love.

Every day there are angels waiting to accept all sorts of humans with all of their flaws and humanly imperfections. Stanza five points to the fact that nobody is perfect but that we do the best we can with what we are given in this world as we carry out our daily “habits.” Even nuns carry sins of their own. Richard Wilbur is writing about the fact that no matter who we are, where we come from, or what we do, we all have a soul. We have souls to remind us of the good things in this world, the magical and wonderful things. Our souls are loving and even when we make mistakes, our souls are accepting of the natural flaws of this world. There is a fine line and it can be difficult to find the balance between our natural human sins and that of pure, white angels. Wilbur is reminding us that there is plenty of beauty on this earth for us to experience. It’s right under our noses and if we don’t take the time to notice and enjoy it, we will miss out on all of the beautiful things of this
