One in twenty girls and one in twenty boys is a victim of child sexual abuse, and Charlie happened to be one of the victims (Finkelhor). Charlie could have been the All-American boy, with the ambitions of playing college football, a cheerleader girlfriend by his side, and a cool group of friends to hangout with on Saturday nights. The actions of other people in his life lead to a different social scene and a different outcome for him. Instead of being an outgoing teenager, he is overwhelmed by internal emotional scarring that leads to a less than normal type of life. Fifteen-year-old Charlie is coping with the suicide of his friend, Michael. At school, Charlie finds a friend and mentor in his English teacher, Bill, overcomes his chronic shyness, and starts talking to his classmate, Patrick, who later becomes his best friend along with his step-sister Sam. During his freshman year, Charlie encounters: his first kiss, deals with bullies, is introduced to drugs and drinking, and makes friends, loses them, and gains them back. ... relate to other people through their shared experiences, and people accept the love they think they deserve are shown. The roots of all of Charlie’s problems come from when he was younger and his Aunt Helen sexually abused him. This act of molestation leads to him having different social issues along with personal conflicts he deals with continuously through his life. Meeting Sam and Patrick changed Charlie in a positive way; he was now able to have friends who understood that he was a unique and shy person, but they accepted him despite his flaws. The storyline that is shown through this movie helps the audience realize the signs of someone that was or is being sexually abused. The audience is aware that a person will constantly battle the emotional scarring left after the abuse is done, and just because the problem is gone does not mean the memory is erased.
