Paulo Friere’s essay “The ‘Banking’ concept of education” is a short passage from his book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" that explains the two primary types of education that exist according to Friere. Friere describes the two types of educating as the banking concept, which is briefly described as the transfer of the knowledgeable teacher, to the ignorant student "Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor." (Friere 1), and the problem-poser, which he describes as two way communication in which the students and teacher both teach and learn from one another "Through dialogue, the teacher-of-the-students and the students-of-the-teacher cease to exist and a new term emerges: teacher-student with students-teachers" (Friere 7). The Film “Dead Poet Society” provides us with many examples of both these concepts from the school’s traditional method of banking concept educating, to a new teacher 's, John Keating, demonstration of a problem-poser methodology of educating the students. Throughout the course of the Film we are presented with examples of both education methods in practice from the teachers and the parents of the students, and the impact each method has on the lives of the students at Welton Academy. Dead Poet’s Society begins with the introduction of a new schoolyear at Welton Academy, and the first scene presents a physical representation of one of the key banking concept ideas, “the teacher knows everything and the students know nothing” (Friere 2) when there is the passing of the flame of the candles, described in the film as the ‘Light of knowledge” which is a gift from those with knowledge, to those without. “In the banking concept of educatio... ... middle of paper ... ...tituted in the poetry class that was being taught by Mr. Keating, and now by The Headmaster, Mr. Nolan. Nolan brings back reference to the introductory essay by “Dr. J. Evans Pritchard Ph. D”. When this passage is being read, a symbol of the banking concept returning to the classroom, the students who were members of the dead poets society stand up in rebellion of Mr. Nolan, and his oppression. This scene shows both education methods present throughout the film and described by Friere. Nolan makes an attempt to force the banking concept back on the students, and ignore the principals of the problem posing critically thinking students they have become “Education as the exercise of domination stimulates the credulity of students, with the ideological intent (often not perceived by the educators) of indoctrinating them to adapt to the world of oppression” (Friere 6)..
