Situation Analysis In our day-to-day living, communication is very important, no matter what dialect you are using. People communicate to others by means and through different forms like using verbal and non-verbal manners to express thoughts, ideas, and emotions.
The way you are communicating with other is not just only through phone and letters, because nowadays, technology has been evolved and continues in evolving. And now, every people use technology to communicate with their loved-ones through with the use of different social media sites. Brown also emphasized that your own language and the task that you are used to do will allow you as a student to see the relevance of the different classroom activities. It is easier to understand the message if the sender and receiver use their local language rather than other languages. Furthermore, he said that to be able to improve one’s oral communication skill, one must get involved in the process to acquire the proper means and ways of communicating.
Tongco, as cited by Prejoles (1997), stressed in her study that the different complications in oral communication continue to give challenges not just only to the students but also to the English language teachers over the past few years, so that teachers find ways on how to enhance the oral communication competence of their students and how to make language teaching more pertinent and more effective.
According to an interview with Ferrer (2017), he said that oral communication skills are very important because it gives further support for the sender and the receiver to understand the message properly. The level of the Oral Communication competence of the Senior High School learners based on the observations by the researchers is that they tend to be more confident communicating in the Filipino language, rather than using English language to express their thoughts.
Students’ shows low competence in using English language as reflected on the way how they recite or report inside their class and also in extemporaneous speaking. Knowing the fact that Senior High School learners have Oral Communication subjects in both English and Filipino, the trend on their poor oral communication skills is worthy of investigation.
