Describe how Okonkwo died when he killed Ikemefuna: The book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a very in depth book about Nigeria. It describes what their culture is like and how their traditions are different than how most believe are normal. In the book one of the main characters, Okonkwo, suffers many deaths. Okonkwo died in almost all ways when he killed Ikemefuna. A death is a irreversible change. Death can be presented in different ways such as physically, emotionally, politically, and economically. There isn 't just one kind of death. The first of the deaths that Okonkwo experienced in this book was emotional. Okonkwo experienced an emotional death when Ikemefuna was killed. He thought of him as a son more than his own son. It was emotional because Okonkwo had to participate in Ikemefuna’s death. He participated because, he didn 't want to show vulnerability to the other villagers in fear of looking weak like his father was. Since the day Okonkwo left he planned for his return. He made his own garden so he could grow more yams and would be able to trade them when he returned. But, while the missionaries were there they changed the system and brought money into their barter system. Yams were no longer important to the barter system because they had money to use. Okonkwo, upon his return didn 't know what to think because he was used to trading yams, which is why he grew them for the seven years he was gone. Trying to grasp a new idea like this would be really hard. Okonkwo had lived all his life using yams to trade and get the things he needed. The yams were the most valuable thing the villagers had, which is why they used them instead of money. Since he is older this new idea of having to use money to do things was just unheard of for him and he couldn 't accept
