The 1936 film My Man Godfrey begins with two rich sisters picking up a “hobo” at a dump to win a preposterous scavenger hunt and ends with that same man living happily ever after in a mall that he created out of that same dump.This impressive man named Godfrey explains that his reasoning for first going to the scavenger hunt was “to see how a bunch of empty headed nitwits conducted themselves.” Godfrey’s insult at the crowd aligns with Christopher Beach’s reasoning in his work,“Working Ladies And Forgotten Men” that the main movie going population are drawn in and comforted by My Man Godfrey’s negative portrayal of the extremely wealthy. However, I would argue that Godfrey’s role in this movie actually glorifies the wealthy; leaving the viewers dreaming of their own utopian ending instead of finding new dignity in their working class lives. Grey recognizes Godfrey as a fellow Harvard grad. Some earlier signs such as his impressive diction, ease in dressing appropriately, and ability to quickly adapt to the high class lifestyle also show that he has previous experience in a moneyed household. However, these are quickly looked past as Godfrey charms the audience with his witty, and respectable character. At this tea party, the revelation of Godfrey’s true character is largely overshadowed by the performance of another character: Ms. Irene Bullock. He is very rude and h as no respect nor patience for other’s opinions. Within the first pages, while speaking with nice old Mrs. Hitchcock, Hazel responds in very rude ways, “He looked at her sourly and gripped the black hat by the brim. ‘No I ain’t,’ he said in a sharp high nasal Tennessee voice”. This already gives an insight to the type of person he will be. After that encounter with Mrs. Hitchcock he demonstrates his overbearing nature when he practically harasses the porter on false pretenses. The porter himself is characterized to be very grotesque with a description saying “a thick figured man with a round yellow bald head” and “when he bent over, the back of his neck came out in three bulges”, this description gives the reader a hideous image of a giant gross fat man. Because Hazel is so overbearing it demonstrates his disregard for anybody’s feelings. He clearly doesn't see that he is upsetting the porter or that he is bothering him which demonstrates the selfish nature in Hazel because all he cares about is the Porter admitting he is from Eastrod even though he
Through Ginnie Sue’s actions in the novel, she is characterized as a compassionate women. When Jeannette and her younger sister first enter the Pastor household, Ginnie Sue is polite and greets them with a smile and handshake and, “[...] she offered (them) seats at the table,” (Walls 161). Ginnie Sue continues to be polite throughout the meal and Jeannette soon finds out the similarities that her and Ginnie Sue’s family share. After the dinner Jeannette realizes that despite her job and what other people in the neighborhood may think of her, Ginnie Sue is just like anyone else. By the author having Jeannette discover that Ginnie Sue is similar to herself and others it helps to change her perspective of the family and her original judgements of her being vulgar and ill mannered. This film gives women and men roles that don’t exist anymore, during the 60s women were known to care for the family and take care of the house, basically working at home. However, a male was supposed to fight for his family, doing all the hard work so his wife didn’t have too. In today’s world, everyone does what makes them happy. “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the vast social difference between the old aristocrats, the new self-made rich and the poor. He vividly interprets the social stratification during the roaring twenties as each group has their own problems to deal with. Old Money, who have fortunes dating from the 19th century, have built up powerful and influential social connections, and tend to hide their wealth and superiority behind a veneer of civility. The New Money made their fortunes in the 1920s boom and therefore have no social connections and tend to overcompensate for this lack with lavish displays of wealth. As usual, the No Money gets overlooked by the struggle at the top, leaving them forgotten or ignored. Such is exemplified by Jay Gatsby, Myrtle Wilson and Tom Buchanan. Their ambitions distinctly represent their class in which Fitzgerald implies strongly about.

As the rich get richer, the poor remain to fend for themselves, with no help of any kind coming their way. Throughout Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, the two “breeds” of wealthier folk consistently butt heads in an ongoing battle of varying lifestyles. The West Eggers, best represented by Jay Gatsby, are the newly rich, with little to no sense of class or taste. Their polar opposites, the East Eggers, are signified by Tom and Daisy Buchanan; these people have inherited their riches from the country’s wealthiest old families and treat their money with dignity and social grace. Money, a mere object in the hands of the newly wealthy, is unconscientiously squandered by Gatsby in an effort to bring his only source of happiness, Daisy, into his life once again. Over the course of his countless wild parties, he dissipates thousands upon thousands of dollars in unsuccessful attempts to attract Daisy’s attention. For Gatsby, the only way he could capture this happiness is to achieve his personal “American Dream” and end up with Daisy in his arms. Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy is somewhat detrimental to himself and the ones around him; his actions destroy relationships and ultimately get two people killed.

The most prevalent and reoccurring theme is the effect money plays on society’s views of manhood and happiness. Readers are shown multiple characters with a diverse view on manhood. From Walter Lee with his matching societal views that a man should be able to provide whatever his family needs or wants to Lena whose views are a biased compilation of her late husband’s behavior and her own ideals, that a man should maintain his honor and protect his children’s dreams.

Priestly conveys his message through the character of the Inspector who although is not real but adds a great deal of tension and drama. The inspector in the play plays a role of a socialist as he is against capitalist views and so is Priestley. The play concerns the Birling’s who are celebrating their daughter’s engagement to Gerald Croft at the beginning of the play. The evening celebration was for Sheila, Mr Birling’s daughter, and Gerald’s engagement.
Much like in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, society treats views and treats people with money differently than those without it. For example, Tom and Daisy get away with the death of Tom’s mistress because of their wealth “His family was enormously wealthy – even in collage his freedom with money was a matter for reproach” (Fitzgerald,23). Further the reason that Daisy had not married Gatsby all those years ago was because he was poor, it was not until he had an enormous house and lots of money “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me” (Fitzgerald ,367). In the novel The Great Gatsby, the 1920’s was a “throwaway culture, in which things (and people) are used and then abandoned” (Evans). This is true of the lives of the wealthy elite who ruled the East and West Eggs, causing the domination of materialistic thought.
