Moana (2016) is visually breathtaking film with a magnificent storyline as well. It keeps with traditional Disney warmth while creating a whole new feel. The music is gorgeous and unlike any other film. The film even incorporates multiple visual styles throughout without losing continuity. This much anticipate film definitely lived up to its expectations. The characters are strongly portrayed and lovable. There is an individuality to each of them. And the theme rings clear throughout the film: remember who you are. It is instilled into every part and expressed with great emotion. Through brilliant use of linear narrative, design, and sound and music, the theme is clear to all who watch. Most notably, Moana is a classic example of linear narrative. The main character must go on a journey to right the world when their home is threatened. This is not to say that Moana is an unoriginal movie. Rather it’s complete embrace of the linear narrative format supports the theme immensely. This is most evident in the crisis of the film. Moana and Maui have just attempted to pass the lava monster and failed; Maui loses faith and leaves, leaving Moana feeling lost. The crisis is an important to linear narrative. The climax of a film is usually the part that leaves the biggest impact. It is the culmination of the film. Moana’s climax is a showdown between Moana and the lava monster with Maui helping. She realizes who the lava monster truly is and must show that to the monster. The biggest moment of the movie is the monster becoming who she is. It is a moment of self-remembering who she is. This is an extremely explicit show of theme. And by putting it in the climax, it becomes even stronger and leaves more of an impression on people.
