Love is one of the strongest emotions humans experience. It can be dangerous and also very satisfying. The things people do for love are unimaginable. In Marjane Satrapi 's Persepolis, Marjane writes about the hardships and pain her family and friends endured because of their love for their country. "Never before had modern revolution of such depth taken place since the disintegration of the Islamic Empires of Ottoman, Persia and Mughal-India” (Amineh, Eisenstadt 30). She felt left out that her dad was not a "hero" like everyone 's dad. She thought her dad was a coward, but in reality she could not grasp that they were actually a well off family and her dad does do demonstrations but there is more to loose for him. Raised with religion Marjane 's passion as a kid was to be a prophet. To her it was the best thing to be, going around delivering the word of the lord. A lot of children develop imaginary friends, and they take a upon a real life character almost to them. Well for Marjane, this character was God. As mentioned, she wanted to be a prophet, and God as her imaginary friend was going to help her get there. God encourages her to stand up for justice and love. Slower and slower it is perceived how she starts detaching from faith more each time. The moment she finds about the death of her uncle is when she knows she has lost God, and she finds herself lost in the universe. Which ultimately does not improve her relationship with her parents. When she finally met her uncle Anoosh that was involved with Russia, she thought he was the real hero. The fact that he had been captured and he gave nothing away was so intriguing. She loved her country and she knew it. It was definitely a very young patriotic thing to do, but in a normal childhood there should not have to be a worry about living where you live. That kids as young as five already know there is war. But essentially love conquers all. It should be able to break down barriers. Marjane shows us a secret way of love, one that is implied throughout the text. And that love is symbolic in a way because it is what keeps them all alive, even at the end. “Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return” by Marjane Satrapi is a memoir that depicts the troubled life of Marjane Satrapi. Marjane Satrapi, the author, was born in Rasht, Iran in the year 1969. She was born to a rich family in Iran and grew up in Tehran during the revolution and revolt against the Shah, the ruler at the time. She lived during the era where Islam was emerging in Iran and becoming the predominant religion. Marjane lacked academics for two years in Iran and suffered indeed from the bombings of Iraq. These horrific events impacted her and her parents, so as a result was sent to Austria for a better life. Her juxtaposed life in Austria and emergence of maturity is described in Marjane’s second installment of Persepolis.
In the graphic novel, Persepolis, the main character, Marjane, faces many coming of age moments. Each one of these change her in a way that impacts her view on the world around her as her and her family strive for a better life amongst a war that hinders their ability to follow their beliefs. Marjane learns to forgive, experiences pain and suffering, and changes her opinions on God and her own views on religion forever. Persepolis is a book that centers on the author’s family during the Iran-Iraq war that lasted for eight years. Marjane’s experience of the war is quite innocent since she saw it from the eyes of a well protected child. She grew up with need to help and make things better for everyone without really understanding what it takes to make the world a better place. In her mind the only possible way to make a change is by becoming a prophet and using supernatural powers to make the world a better place. Marjane’s childhood is proving that children form defense mechanisms to deal with difficulties. These defense mechanisms take children to “happy” places where things are better and everyone is happy unlike in the real world.
