The novels A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan, Eunoia by Christian Bok, and Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem all use unconventional narrative form and/or genre. Whether it be the unconventional fact that it does not take place in chronological order; which is featured in A Visit From the Goon Squad. Or that all the words featured in the poems of Eunoia are narrative and only feature one type of chosen vowel(s). And that the main character, Lionel has Tourette’s Syndrome and seems to be smarter than everybody else and what the other characters give her credit for in Motherless Brooklyn. In A Visit From the Goon Squad all the characters are connected in one way or another, which is typically not seen in most novels at …show more content…
Motherless Brooklyn is about Lionel Essrog, who just happens to have Tourette’s Syndrome. The book is written in such a way that narrates Lionel’s innermost thoughts and shows the reader that he is smarter than anyone else featured in the novel. This includes the detective that Lionel runs into, which completely ignores the possibility that Lionel has Tourette’s Syndrome. And believe that he is stupider than what they credit him for — which, if he were a real person most people would think the same thing. While telling the story, Motherless Brooklyn also offers a rare glimpse into the mind of someone with Tourette’s Syndrome. “Lionel, my name. Frank and the Minna Men pronounced it to rhyme with vinyl. Lionel Essrog. Line-all. Liable Guesscog. Final Escrow. Ironic Pissclam. And so on. My own name was the original verbal taffy.” (Lethem, Jonathan. “Motherless Brooklyn” A Division of Random Book House. 2000. Book.) While the other characters cannot solve Frank Minna’s murder, Lionel does. This is because he uses his Tourette’s Syndrome to his advantage and does not let go of the hint that Frank Minna gave to him before he died, Irving. And while other authors might have painted Lionel as not the sharpest tool of the shed because of his Tourette’s or even him being taken care by someone he is not. Lionel is depicted more human, even though he is naïve to the fact that Frank Minna had associates in the mob but eventually learns of this and grows from it. He now knows that Frank Minna was not the type of person that he thought he was; and instead of reacting in a negative way the person that he thought he was and instead of reacting in a negative way he knows better for next
D'hoker, Elke, and Gunther Martens, eds. Narrative unreliability in the twentieth-century first-person novel. Vol. 14. Walter de Gruyter, 2008.
In traditional writing styles, the main element to give the story meaning is the narrative itself. However, with more modern and distinct styles such as the short stories written where the narrative is no longer the primary stylistic device, but the use of metaphors and distinctive different narrators applies meaning to the stories. Though it is easy to judge what is different from tradition as inferior, this change is no different than the rise of cubism in the art world. Even though initially many would comment on the art not being “real,” or in this case, the stories being poorly written, this style has even more of an effect. After
The average human would think that going to school and getting an education are the two key items needed to make it in life. Another common belief is, the higher someone goes with their education, the more successful they ought to be. Some may even question if school really makes anyone smarter or not. In order to analyze it, there needs to be recognition of ethos, which is the writer 's appeal to their own credibility, followed by pathos that appeals to the writer’s mind and emotions, and lastly, logos that is a writer’s appeal to logical reasoning. While using the three appeals, I will be analyzing “Against School” an essay written by John Taylor Gatto that gives a glimpse of what modern day schooling is like, and if it actually help kids
It is said that fiction is an essentially rhetorical art and that the author tries to persuade the reader towards a specific view of the world while reading. This is evident in both short stories, A Secret Lost in the Water by Roch Carrier, and He-y Come on Ou-t by Shinichi Hoshi. Although through A Secret Lost in the Water, Roch Carrier displays how fiction is an essentially rhetorical art better than Shinichi Hoshi in He-y, Come on Ou-t (awkard sentence), Shinichi Hoshi demonstrates it better through the use of prognosis. Furthermore, by utilizing the characters, such as the farmer from A Secret Lost in the Water, and the use of symbolism such as the hole from He-y, Come on Ou-t, it is evident that the author makes an endeavour towards persuading
Bernard Malamud emerged as a crucial and contemporary innovator of sports literature. Sports literature as defined by Kevin Baker’s introduction, are stories “drawing upon the natural drama of any sporting contest, and imparting life lessons freely along the way” (viii). Malamud’s debut novel The Natural, is a grim and “antiheroic tale” of a baseball player Roy Hobbs “whose ambitions and desires are constantly thwarted” (vii). Through his novel The Natural, Malamud emerges as a prestigious figure of sports literature through his combination of mythology and baseball, in order to create memorable works in this literary tradition. Malamud in his novel The Natural “draws heavily upon this genre, then stands it on its head” (viii). Baker draws
...involving the confrontation between the mother and her son, Julian seizes the opportunity to berate his mother so she can see how ignorant she is and how he has elevated himself to a status higher than hers. Tragically, this incident leads to his mother’s stroke. It is only at this moment of his mother’s helplessness that all three worlds collide together. Julian’s world of self-righteousness and his mother’s world of self-importance are shattered by the world of reality. Only then is truth apparent to all of the characters in the story.
Non-linear style of writing is when a story is not told in a certain chronological order. Slaughter House Five and Lust is great example of non-linear writing, but are used in different ways. In Slaughter House Five, Kurt Vonnegut uses a science fiction approach. While on the other end Susan Minot uses a journey type of approach to tell her story.
An example of a literary device used in the novel is personal anecdotes. While most the book is composed
Mentioning his friend, Laura, he displays a regretful and apologetic tone, based on his influence of turning a young, virtuous girl to a drug addict. He states that he was “deaf, dumb, and blind,” as he was able to let such appalling things happen to her(160). As time goes on, he depicts a pessimistic and glum manner talking about his family’s conditions after his father passed away and his mother breaking down, eventually with her being taken to a mental hospital. The temptations to gloss over his horrid actions and state of mind during his Harlem ghetto days seem to be stifled, but with culture described in great
‘At its most basic level, narrative complexity is a redefinition of episodic forms under the influence of serial narration—not necessarily a complete merger of episodic and serial forms but a shifting balance. Rejecting the need for plot closure within every episode that typifies conventional episodic form, narrative complexity foregrounds ongoing stories across a range of genres. Additionally, narrative complexity moves serial form outside of the generic assumptions[.]’ (Mittel, 2006, p.32)
Throughout the novels The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and We All Fall Down by Robert Cormier, the authors have a variety of unique forms by using different vocabulary and storytelling to interrupt their own meaning. For example, in The Handmaid's Tale Atwood uses words such as birth mobile meaning a vehicle to transport handmaids to a birthing and encourage their fellow handmaids. Another example, being used in the novel We All Fall Down, Cormier's unique form is not censoring his writing "Did you touch me when you tied me up? Feel my chest? Eleven- year-old boys don't do that, either" (Cormier 178). These techniques are allowing the reader to be drawn into two completely different worlds. Atwood and Cormier are in engaging the reader

Most notably, Moana is a classic example of linear narrative. The main character must go on a journey to right the world when their home is threatened. This is not to say that Moana is an unoriginal movie. Rather it’s complete embrace of the linear narrative format supports the theme immensely. This is most evident in the crisis of the film. Moana and Maui have just attempted to pass the lava monster and failed; Maui loses faith and leaves, leaving Moana feeling lost. The crisis is an important to linear narrative. This is often the time the protagonist has lost hope and faith, where they
