The main goal of this inaugural address was to represent the United States as an important and powerful country that could not be ignored while preserving peaceful international relations. Kennedy’s focal points were the freshly discovered dangers of nuclear power and the quickening arms race. Kennedy forms the point that concentrating on the arms race should be combined with focusing on international relations. Kennedy’s purpose is unite the people of the U.S. and bring everyone together for the good cause of promoting growth in the country. He creates a very inspirational tone in order to establish a connection with the U.S. people. In his speech Kennedy really used several rhetorical strategies of persuasion to motivate and persuade the U.S. people that they made the right choice in choosing him.
“If a free society can not help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.”(Kennedy, 1961) Statements such as these demonstrate how Kennedy appealed to the citizens by simply using reason. The use of logos in his speech was minimal compared to the use of pathos, and ethos.
On January 20, 1961, President John F. Kennedy made his inaugural address to the nation. He stood in front of the podium to convince citizens that he is the best person to turn the country around. He used experiences from the past, such as war, poverty, and the need for peace to get the attention of those who wish to see change within the country as well as countries we work with. Kennedy spoke in a way to to persuade the american people, as well as the soviet union to come together. In this speech President John F. Kennedy used ethos, pathos, and logos as well as other rhetorical devices to convince his audience.
In conclusion, this speech was structured beautifully. Its use of figurative and expressive language makes it an unforgettable speech. Kennedy does a great job of using pathos, ethos, and logos to reiterate his commitment to the American public as well as discuss expected changes. Given the state of the world at the time of his inauguration, the decision to rely so heavily on pathos and ethos was a wise one which got the job done. His use of the rhetoric triangle effectively conveys Kennedy’s plan for America to not only her citizens, but to the world.
No one knew that the Civil War would extend to the capacity that it actually did. On March 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln talked to the People of the Nation, those of the seceded states also including those apart of the Confederacy, about how the war was still engulfing their thoughts. He proceeded to inform those citizens about slavery causing the war and his theory of God controlling the outcome of it. Since he was President previously before and this was his Second Inaugural address, he was believed to be credible. Lincoln implied that he was confident in what was going to come for the future by saying, “I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all.” (Lincoln, line 7-8). The excerpt from Lincoln’s address is effective at convincing the audience to stop encouraging the on going issue of slavery. For example, the wars expansion was a big problem to the nation. It would not have happened without slavery and while they had to go through this war, they were not going to settle for anything less than peace among the nations at the end of it.
John F. Kennedy’s central argument in his inaugural speech is that America needs to act. During this time the Cold War was occurring, causing both America and the Soviet Union to compete in an arms race to see who could make the most nuclear weapons. Kennedy states that America needs to fight for freedom while also negotiating peace with communist countries, especially the Soviet Union. Kennedy does not want a nuclear war to occur, so he wants peace before another world war happens. Kennedy also talks about helping the poor people in other countries.
One of Lincoln’s most famous quotes is “A House divided against itself cannot stand.” This describes his presidency well- focusing on maintaining the Union. In the beginning, Lincoln tried to stay out of sensitive affairs involving the North and South in an attempt to keep them together, promising the South little interference. Despite this, he played a key role in passing the Thirteenth Amendment, doing whatever it takes to end slavery for good and ending the Civil War.
During the Great Depression, Huey Long had an idea on how to fix the situation and Franklin D. Roosevelt, during his inaugural speech, talked about how change would come no matter how hard it was. When Roosevelt took office, America was getting someone who could try and undo all of the damage that Herbert Hoover left behind. Huey Long, Louisiana’s 40th governor, was suggesting different ways to fix the economy three years into Roosevelt’s presidency. Both of these men inspired many Americans that the Depression would not last forever.

President, Lyndon B. Johnson, in his speech asserts that all American citizens are created equal and deserve the right to vote. He supports this claim by first using parallelism and alliteration, then loaded diction and allusion, then quotes, and finally ties it all together by using ethos and pathos. Johnson’s purpose is to get the audience to understand that all men and women are created equal in order to get all American citizens to vote. Johnson begins his assertive speech by stating that all American citizens have a problem with accepting equality for all men and women of every race and ethnicity.

He insisted that the American people should go beyond their differences and to think of “today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom” (3). Kennedy urged the people to celebrate the history of their nation and embrace the future as a united people as he declared that “we are the heirs of that first revolution” (10).
