The execution and success of any plan, strategy or thought either at an organizational or single individual level depends completely on the level of creativity and innovation involved in the implementation process. The terms innovation and creativity have been incorrectly used interchangeably for a long time because most people lack awareness of their exact meanings, which to confusion in their use. Organizations or individuals that use innovative ideas rather than imitating the actions and strategies of others usually stand out from the rest and remain competitive because they are able to produce unique and quality brands, services and applications, which their competitors can only imagine. Combined with invention, creativity and innovation …show more content…
The authors based their conclusion used systematic review of literature that was published between 2002 and 2013 in the area of creativity and innovation. In the article, the authors stated that creativity and innovation are essentially the same process that seeks to create and introduce new products, desired outcomes and improved ways of doing things. Accordingly, innovation and creativity should be defined collectively defined because they are integral parts of the same process; finding alternative solutions to the existing problems. Most of the research studies in the area of creativity has focused on generation of new ideas, while the studies on innovation paid more attention in implementation of the ideas. However, both the idea generation and idea implementation are phases of the same process aimed at finding solutions to a given problem in the organization or society. Depending upon the organization’s economies of scale, innovation in its operations may be done at an individual, multilevel, organizational and team levels. Nonetheless, organizational innovation is the most effective because it will incorporate the input of all the stakeholders and consider their views hence …show more content…
As Mok and Morris (2010) asserts, creativity is the ability to use mental potential to generate new and original ideas, while innovation involves implementation of the new idea. Moreover, while ideas (the main result of creativity) are intangible and thus not measurable, innovation introduces a measurable change in the existing system or develops a physical product, which makes the ideas viable. Furthermore, unlike creativity, where the level or nature and number of conceived ideas depend on imagination, knowledge and curiosity, innovations are usually incremental with every innovation being an improvement of the existing solutions. At advanced levels, creativity may also be regarded as a complete process that involves three important levels namely discovery of the idea, invention, and creation of the idea into reality.
Furthermore, those people who speak out about the concept of defining creativity and innovation as two different terms or processes may base their displeasure on the fact that both processes produce the same result of a better way of doing things. Both creativity and innovation are based on knowledge of individuals as well as capabilities to conceive and implement ideas. Thus, creativity and innovation are integral parts of the same process aimed at developing new products and improving operations in organizations and
...resent diversity within the labor force and “each of them will also have networks of professional associates whose knowledge they can tap in order to solve problems and accomplish tasks. Needless-to-say, diverse people will have diverse networks and provide your company with a vast and diverse meta-network at your disposal” (p.1). In short, in supporting of creativity, innovators essentially need the backing from top leaders, and without that support, many initiatives may break down or die on the vine (Harvard). For any idea to be successful, it is vital that it is aligned with company strategy; there is more likely to occur naturally when top executives involve and take the lead with a idea or creativity initiative and this is a main reason why management commitment is a key factor in the accomplishment of any idea or innovation process (Baumgarther, 2010).
The Myths of Innovation by Scott Berkun completely changed the way I view creativity. I noticed that we all have creativity inside of us; it is by means of expressing our deepest desires and ideas that we display our creativity to others. Burkun destroys myth after myth about innovation, which had me ready to start inventing my first million dollar idea! Berkun outlines ways to tap into innovation and pulls from history to guide us into the future. His simple and common prose gave me courage to tackle the tough problems. I now feel as though I have a firm grasp on what it means to be an effective creator.
Richard Florida's The Rise of the Creative Class gives a very interesting look into the science behind creativity and a thorough understanding of the creative process. According to Florida, creativity is a cognitive ability separate from other mental functions and all aspects related to intelligence. Creative potential does benefit from intelligence though but creativity is still a capacity inherent to all but in varying degrees for each person. Creativity requires self-assurance and the ability to take risks, however, because people utilizing creativity are usually going up against orthodox ideas about things and are challenging the norm and receiving a lot of criticism for these innovations. One must be sure of their self to maintain belief in their innovation through all this criticism and must be willing to take a risk in introducing their product of creativity to the market in the face of all this criticism. Florida claims there are four steps to the creative process. The first is preparation in which the person intently studies the task at hand getting a good grasp of the concept in their mind. The next step is incubation which is still a relatively unknown process of how this works in the mind but what is known is that one must consciously and subconsciously study the concept in their mind. The next step is illumination in which the person sees a new synthesis for this concept. The final step is verification or revision which include all work after the illumination step. I found it interesting that creativity is largely based on experiences and creativity favors people with an intellect with diverse experiences and perspectives because of this. This is because creativity requires the synthesis of different perspectives to create something new and useful. I also found it interesting that many highly creative environments in the past such as China and the Islamic world have died out because of social and economic conditions and these places now are not thought of as creative and intellectual centers anymore. I also found the concept of New Growth Theory to be very interesting in that it is essentially the empowerment of every person through the power of ideas and intellectual property although this theory seems slightly optimistic when it is compared to Karl Marx's goal of the proletariat overthrowing the upper classes.

According to Denhardt, Aristigueta (2012), perspectives on creativity can be as a trait, cognitive skills and ability, behavior, or process. To achieve creativity, a problem must be defined, one must be motivated and stress must be positive. Fostering creativity allow new ideas which create a unique outcome because everyone is different. It should be understood that being artistic, eccentric, or mentally unusual is not a key factor to creativity. Instead, it is a process that includes preparation, concentration, incubation, illumination, and verification (Denhardt, Aristigueta). Preparation is first in the creative process because it consist of defining the problem, gathering information, and thoroughly investigating. The second step is concentration and it consist of the person’s motivation. Without motivation, important information will be missed, and the individual will be blindsided by the lack of concentration. The third step to the creative process is the incubation stage which is the unconscious phase because it is the reordering of information gathered in the first stage. Relaxation is the key in this stage because the subconscious work and ideas takes it course. Next is the illumination stage in which the individual comes up with a final solution or idea. Verification is the final stage of the creative process. It includes testing,
Creativity and problem solving: “ the mental and social process used to generate ideas, concepts and associations that lead to the exploitation of new ideas” Creativity in the workplace can be integrating by forcing employees to think in new ways to solve traditional problems. Employees must be encouraged to think for themselves and not “group think” has this promotes better solutions to arise and many solutions as each employee or team member will have the opportunity to formulate a solution.
It is hard to differentiate between creativity as in an artistic context and creativity in the context of thinking and problem solving. Robinson (2005) explains “that creativity is confined to certain sorts of activities, like the arts or design...[But] the truth is we can be creative at anything that involves the active use of our intelligence.” Many problems in the world today require idea creativity (Bruton, 2010). DE Bono (2009 in Bruton 2010) claims that what most people believe about creative thinking is that it cannot be acquired. According to him, this attitude is very old fashioned and many people don’t know there are actually formal ways of creating new ideas, for instance, the tools of lateral thinking.
In talking about creativity, let us first consider its two possible meanings: Creativity in the sense of creating something new, something which can be seen or heard by others, such as a painting, a sculpture, a symphony, a poem, a novel, etc., or creativity as an attitude, which is the condition of any creation in the former sense but which can exist even though nothing new is created in the world of things…
Creativity is an important aspect of life, as important as that of reception since that’s what shapes our world the way we want it to be in. It helps us in the creation of new extraordinary ideas, the ideas which are able to take over a whole market, or transformation of old concepts, that have no place in this modern world, to newer theories and products. Creativity takes the cluttered ideas in a human mind to their ideal combination and finally onto their physical existence through a series of steps of creative process, says the research of Henri Poincare and Jacques Hadamard.
Let’s start out simple, what is creativity? Creativity as described by Albert Rothenberg is “The state or production of something both new and valuable” (21). The definition itself seems simple, however there are multiple grueling steps to invent something that is truly creative. Creativity is not something that is made overnight, it is a long process with many highs and lows. There are going to be times in which you want to give up, but it is those who continue to work that end up being successful. The change makers in history are the ones who when time were tough kept their faith in their business and did not allow any doubt to creep into their minds. They took criticism from everyone, but they never gave up on their ideas, they instead stood
Creativity is the mental characteristic that allows a person to think outside of the box, which results in innovative or different approaches to a particular task. It requires passion and commitment. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life. It does not arise in a vacuum; it requires a certain degree of both general knowledge and field-specific knowledge. In this something new and value able is created such as an idea, a design, a literary work, a painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc.
In 21st century, the development of economic and technology is spreading widely all around the world. It is one of the main cause leads to the competition between many organisations or companies. There are many different organisations and they all want to be successful and well-known in the world by their brands. However, the opportunity is limited so the competition would be more dramatically. In addition, the awareness of people is higher than before and they need more products with both high quality and nice shape. In order to afford their satisfaction, the organisations need to create something newer and better. Therefore, the possible solution to help the organisation develop better is creativity. Creativity is based on the ability of each individual and it is the most persuadable and reliable criteria to evaluate the quality of the organisations. This report was written to help people understand more about the creativity and its benefits for organisations.
Creativity in the workplace is a crucial element in the success of an organization. I chose this topic to explore more in depth because of its importance in our business world today. Lamberton and Minor (2014) define creativity as the ability to create ideas, or solutions to problems, that are unique, appropriate, and valuable (p. 234). A high level of employee creativity can be linked to a more productive and lucrative business.
While creativity is the ability to produce new and unique ideas, innovation is the implementation of that creativity - that's the introduction of a new idea, solution, process, or product. Creativity and innovation should be the priority of every business.
Accomplished with “creativity” is another concept which is known as “innovation”. According to ANAO (2009), they defined innovation as “creation and implementation of new processes, products, services and methods of delivery which result in significant improvements in the efficiency, effectiveness or quality of outcomes”. If creativity is the new ideas, innovation is the application of those ideas to reach a better result. “Given the importance of public sector, public sector innovation is of central concern in discussions of social welfare, productivity growth and long-term employment”, said Windrum, Kock and Elgar (2008). Different factors join together to influent and motivate the innovation process in public sector such as economic, industrial, political, relational and personal
