Almost everyone has some type of an alter identity. Some alter identities may be obvious and others might hide them better. The Hulk’s alter identity/ego is Bruce Banner. Bruce transforms into the Hulk under emotional stress or his will power to accomplish things. When Bruce changes physically to a green muscular figure, he changes emotionally as well because he is living a double life. Comic heroes tend to disguise their hero identity because it may be based on their past, and what they want to accomplish. Dual identities not only create two characters, but two appearances as well. It is hard to control their emotional state at all times, which leads to complications in life. Having an alter identity creates a life where they can go …show more content…
Beowulf is “stronger than anyone anywhere in the world” (Raffel 110-111). Everyone knows how strong Beowulf was because they have watched him rise from the darkness of war, fighting and hunting monsters out of the ocean (246-253). Opposed to Beowulf controlling his strength, Hulk’s limitless strength is depended on his emotions, especially his rage. Hulk is strong enough to destroy anyone he wants to, if he is angry enough. Hulk is portrayed as a “dull-looking muscleman or a steroid addict” and he “embodies an inner rage” (Knowles 154). Hulk is physically one of the strongest and most powerful comic heroes of all time (Marvel). Both Beowulf and Hulk have supernatural strength.
Heroes risk their own lives for the glory for the good. Beowulf fights dragons alone to protect his people (Raffel 46). He did not need weapons to slay the dragon, he only needed courage. He told his men to stay back because he did not want to risk other lives (Bonnell). Hulk does the same; he fights villains to save the society. He does not want to put others in danger. He cares deeply for his loved ones trying to protect them from evil (Jones). Both Beowulf and Hulk care about saving their people and want to keep them from harm’s way, even if that means fighting the villains

Hercules is famous for his super strength and for saving the world. Hercules slayed loins, captured animals, and fought giants, all using his supernatural strength (Bonnell). Hulk uses his incredible strength to save the world as well. The angrier Hulk gets, the stronger he becomes. His strength allows him to jump into Earth’s orbit and to jump across continents. Hulk is strong enough to overpower and destroy his enemies. Hulk has limitless strength depending on his emotions at he time (Marvel). Both Hercules and Hulk use their super strength to defeat the
First of all, the character Hercules was a non-hero who later received the power of strength. As a young boy Hercules wished to overcome any problem and always had in mind to be a strong man and to do the impossible. For example, in the movie , Hercules is a hard working kid who later by his parents gained a valuable power of strength being “introduced in ordinary surrounding in a mundane world, doing mundane things “ (Linda Seger 2) Hercules could not believe where all his strength was coming from because he had become too powerful to believe. Seger also explained that “this is how...
Some heroes show their strength in the form of smarts, emotion, physical strength, and much more. Beowulf displays a remarkable amount of physical strength, and mental strategies.
There are many things to take into consideration when characterizing a person as a hero. Heros are typically seen as people who accomplish brave deeds and fulfill noble tasks for the greater good of things. In the epic poem Beowulf by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet a hero is revealed. What makes Beowulf a hero is his unbelievable strength and power. He does not get discouraged or let anything stear him away from what he feels needs to be done for the safety of others. In his battles with the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother and the dragon Beowulf exhibits his strength and will to fight. Beowulf, is loyal to his people and his king. What I feel is the most important quality of Beowulf, though, is his willingness to risk his life for the good
Beowulf represents what a modern hero truly is rather than Dante the pilgrim, because he displays qualities of courage, pride, and humility. In order to be considered a modern hero the individual must demonstrate these particular qualities, and courage, pride, and humility should be reflected in the actions they make.
Beowulf risk his life for populace numerous of times. Beowulf went to help a person that wasn’t even art of his society knowing that he might die but he didn’t care because the daredevil inside of him would not go out without a fight. Beowulf fought the monster Grendel without arms knowing that it may not work but at the
A hero always fights to win but it not unfair in battle. For example, Beowulf could have fought Grendel with a sword and made the battle much easier for himself because Grendel, "In his recklessness cares not for weapons" (Norton, 32). Beowulf would rather have a fair battle so he uses his special strength, courage and ability and he wins, like a hero does.
In order for a person to be considered a hero they must have a certain quality. The quality that a hero should have is bravery. All heroes should be brave because if they go into a dangerous situation, they need to be able to stand strong under the fear. “ He thought you were only brave if you knew something was dangerous and scary and you carried on regardless(Mount)”.
When comparing modern heroes to classical ones, there is an important aspect to take note of, irregular abilities. In epics, such as Beowulf, the main character and hero of the story has abilities that no normal man possesses, which is similar to the heroes of today. The figures we label as modern heroes can be alien (Wonder-Woman), geniuses (Batman), or even contain special powers (Spider-Man). Within the story Beowulf, it is noted that a warrior fights for justice for the kingdom and city and they try their hardest to bring honor to whomever/whatever they are fighting for. Similarly once the leader of a warrior dies, the warrior will do his best to bring honor and avenge his leader. This is seen in Beowulf whenever Wiglaf promises to protect the throne like Beowulf had done and even calls anyone disloyal to Beowulf a coward, as they left him alone to fight a dragon. This is also quite similar to modern heroes, for example, when Robin decides to take over as Batman when Gotham believed he was dead. He decided to avenge Batman and honor him in the best way he could, bringing justice to Gotham and fighting the villains just as his mentor
Beowulf was passed on from person to person. Beowulf possesses the superhuman abilities, and the amazing power to hold his breath under water for an unlimited period of time. It is easy to feel that these characteristics separate from the realistic nature of the story, and gives the impression that Beowulf is more like a myth than a man. In the epic Beowulf, he's portrayed as almost inhumane, but clearly fulfilled his role as a true hero.
Although not every hero shouts “Avengers Assemble” before a worthy deed, heroism is shown in all aspects of the everyday world. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing. Among the various ideas of what it means to be a hero, boldness and valiance capture the essence of heroism.
In the film, Deadpool is insane, quick witted, and--at times-- inappropriate, while Beowulf is confident, brave, and cunning. Deadpool has regenerative abilities, immune to diseases, and fast speed, while Beowulf has a magical sword, water breathing ability, and incredible strength. Both Beowulf and Deadpool were looked upon as strong, invincible, and basically legendary. While both heroes have superhuman abilities, their personalities are quite different. Nonetheless, the heroes characteristics fits in the time period in which they are set. Anglo-Saxon epic hero needed to be overly brave and powerful-- which is seen in Beowulf when he managed to massacre a lake full of monsters (Beowulf, line 575-578). On the other hand, modern heroism portrays personalities or qualities seen in actual modern society: free, wild, and expressive. From the qualities portrayed, it could be understood how the Anglo-Saxons wanted a brave and powerful hero, while modern society wants a hero in which it can relate to--like how normal modern people
Beowulf’s fight against the dragon shows Beowulf as a hero. Although Beowulf had previously defeated two other foes, he stands fast and fights his most formidable foe yet, the dragon. Dragons were notoriously difficult to kill, and the poem states that it was a great man, who could kill a dragon, even if it meant losing one's life. While others cower away Beowulf fights the dragon. Beowulf defeats the dragon but loses his life in the same instance. Like the classical hero Beowulf loses his special status in death. Beowulf sought no compensation for his services; the mere satisfaction of helping others was pay enough. Like his two previous battles Beowulf fights for those who could not fight for themselves.
He showed great courage, strength, leadership and intrepidness. Beowulf defeated a beast that swooped up an entire room of people and ate them. He took his men on a dangerous voyage to Grendal’s deep, dark lair. Beowulf also demonstrated strength that a normal man couldn’t when he lifted a sword crafted for giants. Although Beowulf was an Anglo-Saxon hero centuries removed, his heroic attributes still appeal to heroes today. Although Beowulf has super strength, he still shows courage, initiative, selflessness, and desire to make the world a better place just like heroes of
Hercules was the strongest of all the heroes and of course a possessor of superhuman strength. Hercules was an excellence marksman, and also a champion wrestler who once wrestled the great god Zeus to a draw! It is said that Hercules made the god of the sea Poseidon give way in battle, and wounded Ares the god of war in another battle. Hercules could toss boulders around like pebbles and move mountains that got in the way of his cattle. The possessor of superhuman strength also relieved the Titan Atlas of the burden of holding up the heavens. Like his strength Hercules’s bravery showed tremendously in times of need.
These heroes are not the equivalents to the Lone Ranger or Superman; they might even flee instead of fight a dangerous situation. However, when they do fight, they fight with flesh and bone. They fight with emotions and tears. They fight with anger and fears. They fight with confusion. They fight for their country. They fight to avoid the shame and embarrassment. They fight because of obligations to the family, to the country, and to themselves. The heroes that come to mind through these descriptions are the ones fighting in uniforms. They are fighting in lands unknown. They are captured and tortured. They are young and naïve but they are obligated to perform their patriotic duties. They are the soldiers of my country, your country, and our country. They are the protagonists and characters of The Things They Carried, The Sorrow of War, and Crossing ...
