What is the difference between a hero and a zero? Go on Google Images and search “hero.” You may see things like capes, masks, and Superman. It is guaranteed that if you dress like that band go for a walk everyone will say you’re a hero. But is this what really defines a hero? In the epic “The Odyssey” (by Homer) the main character Odysseus is classified as a hero. It is important that we confirm the heroism of a hero or havoc is destined. A hero is deemed heroic if he or she exhibits selflessness, an inspirational personality, and bravery for a righteous idea, person, or thing. Odysseus was a noble hero known throughout Greek civilization. He is also known as the hero of the epic poem The Odyssey (by Homer) and the king of Ithaca. Odysseus
Bravery enabled him to survive his adventures. Bravery is a significant quality a hero must have. He encountered many monsters and beasts during his voyage. One of the many was Circe. Circe turns Odysseus’s men into pigs all but Eurylochus, who manages an escape. “Eurylochus tells Odysseus what has happened and begs him to sail away from Circes Island. Against this advice, however, Odysseus rushes to save his men from the enchantress… Hermes warns Odysseus that he must make the goddess swear she must play no switches tricks.” (10. Summary after line 45) This was definitely an audacious act for many reasons. This depicts bravery because not only did Eurylochus warn him but so did the god Hermes and he ignored such strong suggestions. Also, he was well aware of Circes power and trickery yet despite this he proceeded. Not only this but climbing the towering and dangerous mountain also required bravery. This was an example of bravery because Odysseus knew he could face potential death or worse but still he advanced facing fear in the eye. In Book 1, New Coasts and Poseidon’s Son Odysseus begins to tell King Alcinous of his adventures. “I am Laertes son, Odysseus. Men hold me formidable for guile and peace in war.”(9.7-9) Odysseus displays his bravery by participating in the long, cruel and violent Trojan War leading his men and risking the possibility of life. Odysseus had a remarkable trait of self-sacrifice, was an excessively brave man, and was uplifting and inspiring.
