Johns Bul Dau’s Journey
John Bul Dau is just one of the many lost boys of Sudan. His story takes us away from our everyday lives and shows us the hardships that the people of Southern Sudan faced as they fought for survival. Growing up into the man he is today, John narrates the story of his past life in an inspirational book titled “God Grew Tired of Us”. From age thirteen and into adulthood, he faced many challenges. Some of his challenges include: encountering conflict with Northern Sudan soldiers, handling the disturbances of nature, and questioning his own religious views.To this day, he remembers these hardships and has done what he can to help his people.
His first encounter with hostile men occurred at the Dinka village of Duk Payuel.
It becomes a great obstacle for John, as well as a threat. Not only is it ridiculously hot year round, but Africa has vast wild life. One great example is an occurrence where John and thousands of refuges were trapped on the banks of the Gilo River. They had Ethiopian solders on one side and a crocodile filled river on the other. As John started to hear grenades being launched, he saw many soldiers and vehicles. He had no choice but to jump into the river, face the vicious crocodiles, and “attempt” to swim ten minutes without having the physical skills to do so. Meanwhile crossing the river, he was pushed under water by a man who couldn 't swim at all and then he had to help another man make it across. John states that “All over the river, similar dramas of survival were being played out as swimmers struggled towards the far shore and non-swimmers grasped for anybody or anything that floated” ( Bul Dau and Sweeney). After the challenge was overcome, the survivors shared their stories of the crossing. John later states “I know the crocs had a feast, because others who made it to the western shore told me they had seen their friends in the beasts’ cold
