The book I choose for my book report was “Garbology” a book written by Edwards Humes. I found this book a very interesting book and was quite influential. The book “garbology” focuses on many concerns that are still relevant in society today. Each of these issues circles around the fact that the people in the United States produce way to much garbage. Americans produce more trash than anyone else on the planet throwing away 7.1 pounds per person per day, meaning on average each American is on track to generate 102 tons of trash a year. Many people are unknowingly exposed to air pollution and have no idea. Some common causes of air pollution are automobiles, factories, landfills and toxic materials. Air pollution destroys the environment; it causes climate change because it greatly affects the greenhouse effect and it causes acid rain. Acid rain contaminates water and destroys animal’s homes. Air pollution has many effects on people it causes coughing, elevates your risk of asthma, wheezing, it can cause diseases and birth defects. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific trash vortex, is a collection of litter which has ended up in oceans, seas and other large bodies of water. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch spans from the West Coast of America to Japan. These areas are linked together by the North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone; this convergence zone acts as a highway for litter to move from one patch to another. It has also been theorised that the ocean floor beneath the Great pacific garbage patch is also littered with a lot of rubbish on its own. This is a valid theory because it has been proven by Oceanographers and Ecologists that 70% of marine debris actually sinks down to the ocean floor. When we think of air pollution we think of the refineries in our cities and the exhaust coming from our cars mostly. In reality there are many more pollutants that we don't think about every day. The six most common air pollutants are; “Carbon monoxide, Nitrogen oxides, Sulphur oxides, Particulate matter, Volatile organic compounds, and Ground-level ozone (nitrogen oxide and Volatile organic compounds reaction)”(David Suzuki Foundation). The fact is people are dying from air pollution and we are doing nothing to make it better, in fact air pollution is getting worse.
The majority of people waste food on a daily basis. In fact, in the U.S. alone there is an estimate that over half of the food produced goes uneaten; meanwhile there are people who are in need of food, and it ultimately goes to waste (Dockterman). For example, in his essay, “On Dumpster Diving,” author Lars Eighner writes about his experiences of dumpster diving with his pet dog, during his years of homelessness. According to Eighner, much of the food and materials he came across in the dumpsters were in usable shape, and many items were new. Clearly there needs to be a change in American food waste, in current and, hopefully not so much in, future generations. First I will summarize an excerpt out of Heather Roger's essay, Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage published in 2005. Second I will summarize Lars Eighner essay On Dumpster Diving published in 1995. Our government needs to immediately enforce a set of strict standardized laws that carefully regulate and monitor the disposal of todays and more importantly tomorrow trash. I will argue that this is necessary for large corporations and businesses to deduce their consumption. Finally I will argue that we need to educate the public about the importance and need to restrict our consumption to secure our future.

Though when comparing the United States to other countries around the world with the amount of garbage produced annually, we top the scales around two hundred and thirty-six million tons. Even japan, ranked third and half the size of America, has less then fifty-five million tons of garbage annually. (Forbes) As we continue to diminish our sources at alarming rate, people often forget the treatment and infrastructure required to manage all our garbage. The sad but inevitable process of wiping out forests and preserved land for more space for urban living hugely hurts not only American population but foreign companies who wish to do future international business in our country.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an area of the ocean filled with mostly rubbish, most of which are not biodegradable, such as plastic and glass. It continues to grow and accumulate each year and is twice the size of Texas!
Pollution is affecting many individuals and life, as we know it. We need to do something about how it’s affecting our world. That’s why I urge the issue that more people should realize that pollution is an issue that needs to be prevented because of its negative consequences. Which are health affects, the total destruction of environments, and the death of animals and plants. More awareness must be brought up amongst the people and they must realize the long-term benefits it has for the world.
There are thousands of landfills located around the earth. Many people believe when they put trash in their recycling bin it’s being treated like all of the other trash that can’t be recycled. However, that is not the case. Many researchers have discovered that more garbage was dumped in the landfills in 2012 than ever before. John T. Powell, a researcher from Yale University, used trade data to measure trash levels in the landfills. He also discovered that in 2012, a total 262 million tons of waste were dumped in the landfills.

Nowadays environmental pollution plays a very important role in the biggest questions in our everyday life. It is easy to find there is so much trash around us even in our beautiful campus. For example, these days I usually see some cans, wine bottles, and some paper trash like packaging bags in my way to class. I wake up every day with a smiling face, but at the time I see them, I can not smile anymore. I think no one can stand the green trees, the red flowers growing in the sea of the trash.

There are many different types of pollution such as air, water, and land. The pollution of our environment is due to garbage. Garbage is improperly disposed into rivers or other water bodies leading to water pollution. Some countries do not have the technology to treat large amounts of water before letting it back into the rivers and ocean. As a kid from a developing country, I noticed a lot of things when I was on the road with my friend visiting neighboring states in India. I found that piles of garbage were placed near the villages. These piles of garbage were producing a liquid that would flow down and infect the only water source of the villagers. When I came back and researched the topic, I found that garbage could also have other negative effects. Dumping the waste materials on the ground could lead to ground poisoning. Ground poisoning occurs when the ground is regularly in contact with poisonous materials, leading to the ground water being polluted and the land losing its fertility, causing great damage to the ecosystem. Loss of fertility in land can lead to drought. The methane gas produce by the decomposing piles of garbage causes air pollution.
