Settings - The Bowery in New York. Late 1800's. A tenement that Maggie's family and many other families live in. Devil's Row and Rum Alley. Opening scene - Jimmie and Billie are fighting in the street outside of Jimmie's tenement house. Boys from Devil's Row are fighting against Jimmie and his friends from Rum Alley. Pete shows up but instead of taking sides, he tries to resolve the matter since he is older than all the boys. We then see Jimmie go inside and "meet" the family. His alcoholic parents ant their violent bahaviors, and his siblings who seem to not do anything right. Maggie and Tommie recieve the most violent treatment. Tommie (the baby) dies and so does Mr. Johnson (their father); which is probably the best for the family. Although, Pete is higher in class than they are, they do not want Maggie to disgrace the family by being out with him all the time. They kick Maggie out of the tenement house so she has no choice other than to live with Pete. However, after Jimmie tries to protect the honor of his family, the relationship between Maggie and Pete stops immeadiately. This leaves Maggie with no place to stay, which is when she becomes a prostitute and lives in the street. Hence- Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. The story begins following a woman (we assume to be Maggie), she is walking down the street and a man begins following her. They walk together down to the river, but the story does not state what exactly happens.....so you can infer what happened. Jimmie finds out that Maggie is supposedly dead. He tells their mother who, even though she never loved Maggie, makes a big scene infront of the whole tenement house and all their neighbors. Maggie is actually dead.
