Throughout society the problems of war, hunger, and sexism are spoken out against frequently. However, there are problems that society as a whole faces that needs more attention from the general population. The problem of depression has become more prevalent among society in the last 50 years. Depression is a societal ill that countless authors and poets have focused on throughout their literary pieces. Depression is captured especially by poets who use their poems as a protest against the problem which is depression. Poets and authors use selective diction and symbolism to focus on the themes surrounding depression. Throughout poetry diction plays a vital role in describing the topic the poet is speaking about. Pablo Neruda 's usage of diction is useful for readers to infer what is causing the depression. For example, Neruda uses phrases such as, “Ive lost her,” “my love couldn 't keep her,” and “she is not with me”. The diction and phrases the poet uses infers that the depression is a result of the lack of love and the heartbreak the speaker feels. Pablo Neruda gives readers an insight of what is causing the depression, but other poets highlight what the depression feels like with their usage of diction. In Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” diction is a powerful tool. This is demonstrated when the speaker states: Darkness there, and nothing more.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before;

Poe’s selective usage of diction gives readers the ability to conclude the speakers tone and feelings. The tone in literature is used to describe the speakers attitude and feelings towards the theme written about. Readers may understand the tone of the speaker in just a line or two, this makes it one of the most essential tools in poetry. A clear example of tone is displayed in “The Raven” when the speaker states, “ Darkness there, and nothing more. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,” (24-27). The speaker is displaying the tone of helplessness and fear for the reader to understand the mindset which the poet has when writing regarding the theme. The tone highlights the societal ill that the poet is focused on.
