If you ask people, what their favorite book is, they will answer right away. Ask them why that book, most of the responses are because it marked their life or it relates closely to what they are living. "Dark Inside" by Jeyn Roberts is one of those books that marks people's lives. This book makes you see life in a different perspective. This literature should be recommended and shared with people because it makes you rethink about yourself and see the world in a different light.

The essay begins with Griffin across the room from a woman called Laura. Griffin recalls the lady taking on an identity from long ago: “As she speaks the space between us grows larger. She has entered her past. She is speaking of her childhood.” (Griffin 233) Griffin then begins to document memories told from the lady about her family, and specifically her father. Her father was a German soldier from around the same time as Himmler. Griffin carefully weaves the story of Laura with her own comments and metaphors from her unique writing style.
I can relate this book to my life in many ways; it was easier for me to relate to this book because were both 18 year old girls who want to live life the right way. Also I don’t want to live life trying to be like everyone else, so this was really encouraging to me. A part that helped me was the part about confidence and how important that is. Its important to have confidence in your faith because say you get in a situation you can protect your faith and stand up for what you believe. Another part that I can really apply to my life was how when people were talking about her she didn’t even beg to know. Personally whenever I hear that someone was talking about me, I really want to know what they said! This helped me to learn that why fill my brain with negativity sinful gossip, because that’s not what Jesus would do.
Through out history in the United States what it means to be a black person has taken on different meanings. This is a result of forced the segregation that occurred during the post slavery era. Whites wanted to keep the Caucasian race “pure” and in order to do so anyone that had one drop of black blood in them was considered black. This is very different from the way today’s society identifies black people. Presently, a black person is more likely to be identified by the color of their skin or their phenotype instead of their genotype. Nat Turner's belief that he was a mystic, born for some great purpose; a spiritual savior, chosen to lead Black slaves to freedom, justified his bloody rebellion against slave owners in Virginia. His actions did not so much spring from the fact that members of his family had been beaten, separated or sold, but rather from his own deep sense of freedom spoken in the Bible. From the time Nat Turner was four-years-old, he had been recognized as intelligent, able to understand beyond his years. He continued to search for religious truth and began to have visions or signs of being called by God. By the time Nat Turner reached manhood, the path his life would take was clear; his destiny would be to bring his fellow slaves out of bondage.

William Stafford in my mind, a visionary seeking to enlighten us through words he wrote in the poem, he talks his travels down a dark road only to find a dead deer on the road. In the poem he talks about how he moved the deer out of the dark road and pushing it down a hill. The poem is great at making you visualize what is happen as you read it. This takes place in present day Tokyo, Japan where the lives of several individuals with unique personalities and hidden symbolism unfold through out one night. They each contribute to the real meaning behind the author’s point of view in the novel. It will provide an emotional and personal connection in some way to those that read it.
In Both Grendel and Beowulf, there is conflict. The conflict is betwixt the themes of light and dark, Paganism vs. Christianity, and Man vs. Beast. Grendel, the main character in Grendel and the secondary character in Beowulf, faces external battles but the most important battle take place internally. John Gardener recognized the basis for Grendel’s predicament which is “his [Grendel] stubborn cling to skepticism and cold, hard reason. . .” (Grendel’s Geis). Though there are many different themes present in both stories, there is one theme that remains consistent throughout out both. This theme is the lack of acceptance. Grendel’s in-acceptance is rooted in his lack of understanding of the world and its functions. As a result of the many things that have taken place in Grendel’s life, he is perceived as evil yet, not because he wants to be. He is misunderstood and not accepted. Much of Grendel’s evil wrongdoing comes as a result of lack of acceptance, lack of communication, and his ignorance.

Out of the many stories and ideas covered in the second chapter of The Power of Myth titled, “The Journey Inward”, there were three specifically that I felt intrigued by the most. All in which can be related to our lives and sense of self in relation to God and the world we live in. The first message that resonated with me was Campbell’s idea that our dreams are ultimately the result of the conflicts we internalize. He says that a dream, “talks about permanent conditions within your own psyche as they relate to the temporal conditions of your life right now”. He also mentions that the dreamtime has two levels, which consist of a personal and general problem, which we can associate with popular myths and troubles that many others experience. Our dreams “manifest in symbolic and metaphorical images”, says Campbell. Since I am an avid dreamer and sometimes wonder why I dream what I dream, this section of the chapter made me want to follow Campbell’s advice and try and keep track of storylines, symbolisms, and
Comparisons and contrasts are important devices which an author may use to help convey his thoughts and feelings about a situation or an event. Joseph Conrad makes use of these devices in his novel Heart of Darkness. Throughout the novel when he was trying to convey a deeper meaning about a situation or a place, he would us a comparison or contrast. The comparative and contrasting themes in the story help to develop Conrad's ideas and feelings in the Heart of Darkness. Light verses dark, the Thames verses the Congo, the Savages compared to the civilized people, and the darkness of both worlds are all contrasts and comparisons that are important to the meaning as well as the understanding of this novel.
Joseph Conrad’s novella, Heart of Darkness, was written in the year 1902, a time of modernist literature. Heart of Darkness talks about the problems with alienation and confusion as much as it does about imperialism. In the early 1900’s, the lifestyle in England veered towards the Victorian values. Conrad’s novella makes a bridge to connect the Victorian values with the ideas of modernism. Thus “it belongs to a period of change.”(Sardar) For example, the natives are following in the footsteps of their predecessors, following a life of tradition, and their ideas of life are constantly being attacked by people like Mr. Kurtz who think they are doing what is best, when in reality they are creating more confusion
Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is a novella that highlights the dark side of European imperialistic ideals through the eyes of an experienced seaman, Charlie Marlow. Marlow tells his story to four other unnamed men while on board the Nellie sitting at the mouth of the Thames River. The story is told through the Narrator, who serves as the voice of the four other men on board. Marlow’s story is of European conquest, “which mostly means taking (the earth) away from those who have a different complexion or slightly flatter nose than ourselves” (Conrad 6) to gain profit through ivory trade. Although his intent is not to tell his story of freshwater exploration, he explains the effect that his journeys had on him and how colonization affected the European settlers and the native “cannibals”.
