The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon, is about a young boy around 15 years old with an mental illness, his name is Christopher. Christopher is a kid that issues in his life. He starts out in the setting of finding a dead dog in his neighbor’s yard and leading to finding out more about the lies in his family in the end. He is incredibly smart, but he doesn’t always know how to interact with others. He has a difficult time understanding people’s emotions and faces they make. There are other main characters besides Christopher, like his mother, father, and the police officers. He has a hard time meeting new people because he is not used to them and he gets nervous around them, but slowly he realizes how he has to get over the bumps of meeting new people. Christopher has interactions with his dad like dinner or watch television together. Father has always been there for him, when his Mother “died” to when he found out about the dog dying. For instance, when he got to the police station after Christopher had hit the policeman, “He was shouting, ‘I want to see my son,’ and ‘Why the hell is he locked up?’ and ‘Of course I’m bloody angry.’” (pg.16) He was showing the care for his child that he would do anything for him, even if it wasn’t the best for himself. This was before Christopher had found out that his father had killed Wellington. Christopher was still shy and very bad at understanding people. The father had changed interactions throughout the entire story. From taking care of Christopher to yelling at him, to making Christopher untrusting of the Father. “And I said, ‘I don’t want to talk to Father.’ And Father said, ‘I’ll do you a deal.’ He said holding a kitchen timer…” (pg. 218) This was when Christopher and his mother tried to move back in with Father.
