With the ending quote from the movie Crimes and Misdemeanors “it is only we, with our capacity to love, that give meaning to an indifferent universe; and yet, most human beings seem to have the ability to keep trying and find joy from simple things – from their family, their work, and from the hope that future generations might understand more.” I am sure that most people can have there own opinion about the meaning of this quote. Therefore, my opinion of the meaning is that at times in our lives we feel alone in this world. Lester is one of them. He is an over confident T.V. personality, who believes that everything he may say, believe, or do is the right. In Crimes and Misdemeanors, I don’t believe he experience any indifference in the universe. If anything, trying to win over the heart of Halley, Cliffs love interest, was the one of the only difficulties he had to over come. Halley also falls into this category. To answer this first I look at the philosopher Satre, and his idea of existentialism. With the belief that people have no predetermined nature or essence that controls what we are, what we do, or what is valuable for us. People then are radically free to act independently of determination by outside influences. Living with the indifferences, we then are able to create our own nature, or in the instance of the quote, create our own happiness from family, friends and work to improve the future. As humans and having the choice to do whatever one wants, we are still responsible for our actions and consequences, which lead one to the thought that every event has a particular cause.
