Unequal Opportunities Discrimination against African Americans is still apparent in modern society, even after the Civil Rights Movement had taken place in the United States. Richard Wright writes his autobiography from his perspective of growing up as an African American boy constantly feeling rejected by society with troublesome experiences and feelings growing up before the Civil Rights Movement. However, today these issues still occur daily for many African Americans, who are taken advantage of and lack equal opportunities to succeed, compared to Caucasians. If Wright were writing an autobiography titled “Black Boy,” about the life of a young African American growing up in the United States in 2016, he would write about the apparent negative According to the New York Times article, “The Disproportionate Risks of Driving While Black,” Sharon LaFraniere and Andrew W. Lehren discusses the incidents of persecution in Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as the uproar regarding the widespread phenomenons of racial profiling across the US. Many may suggest there could’ve been a logical reason to take action out against Rufus because the officers were wary of him trying to harm them. However, during this incident, Rufus was wrongfully tasered by an officer and received 5 stitches in his lip as well as a chipped tooth from being dragged on Likewise, majority of the time when an officer pulls someone over,it is a descendant of African American blood, because officers use racial profiling as an excuse to pull over an innocent person. A majority of people pulled over in Greensboro, North Carolina are made up of the African American population. “blacks made up 39 % of Greensboro’s driving-age population, African Americans constituted 54 percent of the drivers pulled over” (LaFraniere and Andrew W. Lehren, 2015). Wright would be upset with how far society has progressed in the past few decades, since an African American still lives in fear, knowing there is a possibility of him being pulled over and racially profiled by an officer. According to The New York Times’s article, “White officer is arrested in killing of black man,” author Alan Blinder addresses the public about the alleged shooting of Gregory Gunn by Aaron Smith. Smith claimed he shot Gunn after he considered him a threat at 3 A.M. Some may believe Officer Smith didn’t harm Gunn since there was lacking information to convict Smith as guilty.
