Leadership is a complex idea that is often is hard to define. Everyone seems to have different characteristics that they feel contribute to a good leader. Even though there is no straightforward definition of leadership, there are still certain personality traits, behaviors, skills, and motivators that people admire in a leader. The best example to show how leaders utilize these characteristics is to examine a prominent figure in pop culture, such as Beyoncé. Her life is transparent enough that we can analyze her leadership skills, and how they change in any given situation. Beyoncé’s impact as a leader will be analyzed in three different categories.

The Beyhive encompasses a wide body of people and is extremely diverse. The only way for a person to influence millions of people all across the globe is through some sort of power. Most of Beyoncé’s power comes directly from her fans, which is an example of referent power. Referent power is hard to obtain because it involves a trustworthy connection between the followers and their leader. Once this type of power is achieved it is extremely difficult to maintain. If the followers feel that the leader is no longer looking out for their best interest, they will start to slowly decrease their affiliation with the leader. Beyoncé has strong interpersonal skills that contribute to her high-level referent power. She currently has 61.5 million followers on Instagram and this number is continuously rising. Motivation provides the driving force for direction and persistence toward a defined goal. Beyoncé has a high need for achievement that motivates her to keep working on new material. In an interview with MTV Beyoncé said, “I am a workaholic and I don’t believe in no. I don’t believe in I need to sleep” (Lepore, 2011). She has earned many awards, honors, and accolades because of her determination to be one of the greatest performers. In the last five years, Beyoncé has used empowerment as an essential motivational key to continuously progress in her craft.
