• Beatrice and her mother discuss the Aptitude Test, which is later that day. This is when all the sixteen year olds gather at the “Hub” and are tested so see which faction best suits them. Beatrice learns that she is divergent. Being divergent is dangerous and rewarding. The leaders will kill a divergent if they find out. She must not tell anyone, not even her family about her results. Being divergent also means she cannot be controlled by the government. She is more intelligent and can bend the rules.
• The teens arrive at the Choosing Ceremony the following day. Most of the teens stay in the faction they were born into. Being originally from Abnegation, or the faction of selflessness, Beatrice’s brother Caleb transfers to Erudite, or the faction of knowledge, while she chooses Dauntless, the faction of bravery. After the Choosing Ceremony, the initiatives must start their training. One of the first things that the initiatives do is jumps onto trains and on top of roofs.
