Picture it: the search engine, Google being founded; the world tour of the Spice Girls; the midst of the frenzy Friends caused; the impeachment of President Bill Clinton; Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa; New York Yankees beating the San Diego Padres in a sweep to win the World Series; Michael Jordan’s last hurrah of winning his sixth championship before retiring; and of course, low wages. Welcome to 1998. Across the U.S., there are infinite employment opportunities available from one person to the next. Of course, the opportunities become more and more limited according to the employees’ education and skills. The higher the education, the higher number of opportunities presented to them; the lower the education, the lower number of possible job positions available to them. When comparing upper are revealed by the author, Ehrenreich herself, returning to her grass roots and becoming a member of the working class in 1998. A journalist, Ehrenreich became accustomed to an arguably affluent lifestyle, but was interested in pursuing the realities of minimum wage workers and their inability to provide for themselves and their families. Through out the course of her experiment, she acquired five traditional low wage positions; a waitress, hotel maid, house cleaner, nursing-home aide, and Wal-Mart Associate. In each position, Ehrenreich discovered not only the difficulties the workers had to face at the job, but also the ones they were forced to face after their working hours, at home. Many of the workers Ehrenreich came across revealed themselves in one way or another—whether it be by sharing or in their actions, either way Ehrenreich grasped onto it. When individuals recognize class, limitations and judgment confront us. Instead, we should know it is important to recognize our class, but not let it define and limit us. She sets out to explore the world that welfare mothers are entered. The point was not so much to become poor as to get a sense of the spectrum of low-wage work that existed-from waitressing to housekeeping. She felt mistreated when it was announced that there has been a report on “drug activity”, as a result, the new employees will be required to be tested, as will the current employees on a random basis. She explained feeling mistreated, “I haven 't been treated this way-lined up in the corridor, threatened with locker searches, peppered with carelessly aimed accusations-since junior high school” (Ehrenreich,286). The other problem is that this job shows no sign of being financially viable. Ehrenreich states that there is no secret economies that nourish the poor, “If you can 't put up the two months’ rent you need to secure an apartment, you end up paying through the nose for a room by the week” (286). On the first day of housekeeping, she is yelled and given nineteen rooms to clean. For four hours without a break she striped and remake the beds. At the end of the experience she explained that she couldn 't hold two jobs and couldn 't make enough money to live on with one as where single mothers with children. In the novel Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehnreich, there are many hurtles she must overcome to experience the life of a low income worker. She sets some ground rules for herself, such as always having a car, and starting out with a certain amount of money for her down payment on an apartment. Although the rules are doable, she admits that she broke all of the rules at least once. Even though Barbara didn't hold to her original plan, she was still able to reveal her appeals clearly.

Today, companies will not even touch an application that does not include a Bachelor’s Degree; even if the Bachelor’s Degree has nothing to do with the job being applied for. Attention is not given to whether the hopeful applicant qualifies for the job; all that matters is that the applicant has a Bachelor’s degree. Murray best sums up the American job market when he says, “Employers do not value what the student learned, just that the student has a degree” (Murray). The Rhetorical Triangle states that writing should incorporate ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is establishing credibility, pathos is showing emotion in the writing, and logos is stating logical facts. In “Shooting an Elephant” written by George Orwell and “Nickel and Dimed” by Barbara Ehrenreich powerful messages are conveyed. However, “Shooting an Elephant” is comprised of ethos and pathos. While Orwell’s writing lacks logos “Nickel and Dimed” by Barbara Ehrenreich includes ethos, pathos, and logos. Therefore, while both conveying powerful messages Ehrenreich’s writing includes all three aspects of The Rhetorical Tringle while, Orwell’s writing lacks logos but includes the emotion and credibility.
In her expose, Nickel and Dime, Barbara Ehrenreich shares her experience of what it is like for unskilled women to be forced to be put into the labor market after the welfare reform that was going on in 1998. Ehrenreich wanted to capture her experience by retelling her method of “uncover journalism” in a chronological order type of presentation of events that took place during her endeavor. Her methodologies and actions were some what not orthodox in practice. This was not to be a social experiment that was to recreate a poverty social scenario, but it was to in fact see if she could maintain a lifestyle working low wage paying jobs the way 4 million women were about to experience it. Although Ehrenreich makes good use of rhetoric (ethos, pathos, logos), she is very effective at portraying pathos, trying to get us to understand why we should care about a social situation such as this through, credibility, emotion, and logic.
Rodney K. Smith’s mere opinion of his publication is that children with a higher level are more like to secure a job rather than those with no or little education. His view is upheld by the statistics of bureau that gives a clear statistics of the percentage of the salary earned by students with higher education and that of lower education. This makes his claim more reliable and credible because the bureau of labor and statistics is a reputable institution in the United States that deals with the percentage of people who work in United State. Smith’s own personal anecdote appeals to the feelings of the audience in which it ignites them with feelings of possibility.
The Hart Report, on the other hand, also states the same problem of unemployment and the global recession which has left employers focusing on employees not only with specialists’ skills but also a “broader range of skills and knowledge” (page 6-7). The Hart Report clearly reflects what the needs of contemporary employers are, but the question is whether it is the universities or the students themselves who fail to cope with the requirements of the contemporary world which is filled with technological advancement and critical thinking. The structural-functional analysis of jobs in the U.S. is governed by the workforce stratification and technology. The more educated and diverse a society is the better society’s job market is served. This social economic separation of class has been both good and bad for society. Many workers at the lower levels of employment are both pleased and displeased with many aspects of work. Though this fact also holds true with most any job at any level, pay scale often compensates for endurance of a particular job type.
