In the short “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote depicts the main character Buddy spending the Christmas season with his cousin in other words his best friend. Both characters have a strong relationship which has the factors of refuge, courage and strength. It was a morning in November when the older cousin confound Buddy with her best friend with the exact name. The mood at the end of the text is bleak and cheerless now that his friend is dead. The setting reinforces the theme of the preciousness of a true friend and the poignancy of loss. The narrator detailed Buddy’s cousin as sixty something while Buddy is seven. Even though they stay at the same place “Other people inhabit the house, relatives and though they have power over us, and frequently make us cry, were are not, on the whole, to much aware of the”. (Capote pg. 1). This reveals their relatives they are not to much alike with their relatives and is often payed no attention to. Their friendship is known to be stuck with both of them. Buddy and his cousin hide money so others can’t find it. “These money we keep hidden in an ancient bead purpose under a loose board under the floor under a chamber under my friends bed.” (Capote pg. 4). Mr. Haha Jones a well known businessman is “described as being “gloomy, and a man who never laughs.”” (Capote pg. 4). The disposition of Mr. Jones seems to be dark and is judged by how he attire himself or in other words what people infer. It wasn’t until when Buddy and his cousin gives him fruitcake in exchange for whiskey they wanted for their fruitcake. “Tell you what, just send me one of them fruitcakes instead.” ( Capote pg. 5).
