Sometimes, a movie will surprise you. A story that you thought would be meaningless and shallow somehow manifests into an incredible tale filled with life lessons abounding. Such was the case with my chosen movie for this assignment, the popular romantic comedy “50 First Dates.” This delightful story that has both elements of drama and comedy tells the story of the narcissistic Henry Roth, known far and wide for his playboy tendencies, and his journey to redefine his definition of love through the charming Lucy Whitmore. Meeting by chance at a small café on the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, the two immediately hit it off over a brunch of waffles and coffee. Right here is one of the moments that, for me, defines the moral of the story. He can choose to forget all about Lucy and return to his womanizing ways; or he can stick around, caring for and helping Lucy even though he will not ever be able to get anything out of it. Luckily for Henry, he chooses the latter. And from that moment, a beautiful romance ensues. The rest of the film depicts Henry’s attempts to get Lucy to fall back in love with him every single day. Some days he succeeds, and others he fails; but he keeps coming back no matter what the circumstances. It also shows the extent to which love can change a person. While these changes in every case are not always positive, in the case of Henry Roth, they are nothing but. Love transformed a less than desirable person, into a caring, compassionate man who was willing to give up anything and everything he had to love someone who would not even know who he was when he woke up in the morning. How amazing is that? Henry was so in love with the person that Lucy was that he did not mind having to put in the effort every day to get her to love him

This was done in hopes that she could remember her feelings for him. Henry then leaves Hawaii after saving money he would use to be with Lucy but
Henry suffers from retrograde amnesia due to internal bleeding in the part of the brain that controls memory. This causes him to forget completely everything he ever learned. His entire life is forgotten and he has to basically relearn who he was, only to find he didn’t like who he was and that he didn’t want to be that person. He starts to pay more attention to his daughter and his wife and starts to spend more time with them.

Karen Horney “Distrust between sexes” proceeds go into the different aspects of Love and Relationships. In this book Horney gives examples on how women deal with emotions which transitions from childhood to adult life. The fundamentals of documentation are displayed in unavoidable ways in most occurrences people run into. People are blind to the fact that love in relationships can be destroyed by overt or covert? In some cases lack of sympathy is then blamed, when relationships don’t work out between two individuals. Some couples fall into social, economic defaults which impacts the relationships. These are issues people never stop to think about, all they want to do is shift the blame to one another in a relationship. Self-preservation is a basic instinct for everyone and is present at birth. This can enhance the natural fear of losing ourselves in a relationship (Horney 1930). In Horney discussions I found that a person only feels despair because of the deep emotions of abundant from “Love” during childhood. That can develop more mixed emotions that turn into mistrust, which causes delusions that tell them they are not getting love from their partner (Horney 1930). With these types of feelings mistrust sips into relationships, starting from a child carries over into adult life. Reasons are when a child comes into the world learns everything it needs to know from its parent. If the child’s emotional needs are not taken care of when the family increases, the child will feel a need to compete for affection from the parents, which could turn into a painful situation. Has there ever been a time where you have experienced true love, but everything was not what you expected? You thought everything was at the forefront but there was a deeper meaning to things. Well in the poem “First Love: A Quiz”, A.E. Stallings introduces you to the deeper side of things. This poem doesn’t consist of many literary devices, but Stallings uses her choice of words to make the reader give thought to the text, and to the story being told of Persephone and Hades. The structure of the poem also helps to better understand the actual meaning of the poem. As you read this “quiz” everything gets very abstract and your options become harder and harder to choose from.
It could be with family members, a close friend, or even a stranger on the street. Many factors go into making an interpersonal relationship work, and communication is essential. Without communication, there is no relationship or even a base for the relationship. Henry communicated with Lucy every morning by taking the time to make her updated videos of the events she had missed over the years and also the things that werewas going on in the present. By doing this, he help to keep the relationship strong by showing Lucy that he really did love her, and that he wanted the relationship to work. While Henry was exhibiting great communication skills, Lucy has to have great listening skills. If she chose every day not to watch the videos or not to believe them, then we would have a completely different ending to the story. I spent a lot of time considering what movie I would watch to write this essay. I listed off the movies that I would like to watch again, and then I decided on The Notebook. I didn’t really think I could write about adolescence or children, so I thought that, maybe, I could write about the elderly. The love story that The Notebook tells is truly amazing. I love watching this movie, although I cry every time I watch it.

“Entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little bit of medicine, some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything’s okay. I don’t make those kinds of movies. That, to me, is a lie. Everything’s not okay.” - David Fincher. David Fincher is the director that I am choosing to homage for a number of reasons. I personally find his movies to be some of the deepest, most well made, and beautiful films in recent memory. However it is Fincher’s take on story telling and filmmaking in general that causes me to admire his films so much. This quote exemplifies that, and is something that I whole-heartedly agree with. I am and have always been extremely opinionated and open about my views on the world and I believe that artists have a responsibility to do what they can with their art to help improve the culture that they are helping to create. In this paper I will try to outline exactly how Fincher creates the masterpieces that he does and what I can take from that and apply to my films.

Starting out from small crimes and growing to eventually dealing drugs and numerous other crimes. His boss from the mob named Paul and also Tommy and Jimmy helped guide Henry through problems making sure he made no mistakes and could adapt to his surroundings acting as his institution. Guiding him throughout the movie but also dealing with the conflicts when Henry would learn of new ways to make money through crime and manipulation. This acting as the conflict between human nature and institutional demand in that no matter what institutions do to try to prevent mistakes or unpredictable behavior, human nature will always continue to evolve and need more help in order to adapt to new environments.
Love comes in all forms with no discrimination to sex, age, and ethnicity. The human kind is constantly searching for it, and chasing it, and many times scared to let it go even if it is harmful. In order to understand what is love we must solve the mystery of why humans are so fascinated with love and will do anything to get it.
