Ariana Martinez English 110 Angie Kirk 23 September, 2015 Getting to Know Me When you are barely coming to know someone better, there are so many things you want to know about them. Yet, in order to keep it simple you only get to hear a few things about them. Therefore, the four things you should know about me are what culture I come from, my goals for and after college, my learning styles, and my reflection of myself as a writer. To start off, the first thing you should know about me is that I come from a big Hispanic family. I would identify this as my culture because it includes a unity that not many other families have. My family is big because my father has nine brothers and sisters. Overtime, his brothers and sisters have had children …show more content…
My strongest attributes as a writer are that I state my thesis clearly at the beginning so that my reader knows what my essay will consist of; this makes it easier for them to focus on my writing. My biggest concerns when it comes to writing is that I brainstorm and gain many ideas but I struggle when it comes to elaborating on them, also I tend to paraphrase quotes and it becomes difficult for me to cite. Yet, I hope that in English 110 I have practice and learn how to get rid of these difficulties which will eventually make my essays much stronger and it will become easier for me to write. In English 110, I also hope that any grammar and sentence structures I have trouble with will become easier for me which can also lead to me writing better essays. After stating the four things you should know about me, it may be realizable that there are more things you want to know. Therefore, when you get to know someone and only get to know a few things about them, it is good to keep in mind that there is so much more to that person and it is just a matter of time to get to know them better. Also, maybe those few things you got to know may not be what you expected about that person, therefore one should not judge someone just by their
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
I embraced various parts of the American culture such as its history and language. I enjoy learning about American history and about American holidays and traditions. My family had embraced various American traditions such as the fourth of July and Thanksgiving. These holidays have become part of our lives. As I made friends in school, I not only had Hispanic friends but also American friends with who I learned to socialize with and whom I embraced as no different than myself. I consider myself Mexican American because of these reasons. I am not just Mexican or just American. I identify with both cultures and consider the United States my
Starting with one of the surface aspects of my cultural identity is my language. I speak English, like most people who were born in America I learned English and only English right from the start. I
Personally, my culture consists of being first generation Irish American. My parents immigrated to the United States for more opportunity and to start a family while they were in their twenties. I grew up in upstate New York with four brothers. A big part
What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.
Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. English 102 has taught me many things about writing like locating sources from the library and on line as well as continuing
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
a good idea of how he looks like and how he acts. We can all relate to him as
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
The novels Binti and To the Lighthouse depicts some real-world problems that students face every day. This includes finding yourself or “attempting to learn what kind of person one is and wants in life” (Dictionary.com). People are used to being disguised or act the way society tells them to but never themselves.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
Culture is defined as a characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts (“Culture,” n.d.). As I ponder the culture question as to whom I am, I realize I have a hard time explaining who I am. My religion is that I am a Methodist. I am quite shy when it comes to outings and friends. I have been told by the few friends I do have that I am a collector of strange and unusual facts. I like to stay to myself that way I cannot get hurt by others. As for food, I enjoy a variety of foods. I have taught myself how to cook through google and I have mastered Korean cuisine as well as several other ethnicity foods dishes. I primarily speak English, but I can speak in French, Spanish, and Korean. I enjoy music and I listen to anything from classical music to 60’s music. I enjoy art as I have visited France to be able to enjoy authentic master pieces. As I grew up and entered high school, I won a bid for a spot on our schools color guard team. All in all, I am a mother, a wife, a teacher, and a student. I make time for everyone and everything I enjoy in life and I have learned to not waste a second on anything else.
There is nothing better than having good characteristics. Everyone has different kinds of characteristics. Understanding our characteristics is extremely useful. It helps us to avoid the bad ones and to develop the good ones. We can take active steps to become the person we want to be, and we can make positive changes in our characteristics. Most of characteristics can be learned with practice. Because nobody likes to be around a person who has bad characteristics, it can affect our daily life and friendships. Likewise, lack of good characteristics such as self-confidence can hinder us from achieving our goals. To become effective in our life, we need to develop some good personal characteristics. I know some
There are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture as an individual versus culture in your family, or even within your community. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs.
