An organisation’s management is based on theories developed by researchers that study what managers do and what instituted good management practice. This has led to the formation of a new perspective on management that is called general administrative theory. The theory we are focusing on was developed by a German sociologist named Max Weber. According to him, bureaucracy is the most efficient method of organisation. What is bureaucracy? It is a form of organisation categorised by division of labour, comprehensive rules and regulations, a well-defined hierarchy and objective based relationships. In the early 1900s Max Weber’s bureaucratic theory was spread throughout public and private sectors although it was largely discredited by organisations around the world.

Firstly, there might be a decrease in morale among employees. When jobs and tasks are specialized, there is a tendency that it would be repetitive. This can often cause boredom to some employees and thus would also cause dissatisfaction. Employees are only arbitrated on how they accomplish their main function not the way they do it. With the bureaucratic structure, employees can become passive, abandoned and indifferent to the objectives of the company. Moreover, a bureaucratic structure is rigid. The sets of rules and regulations in a bureaucratic structure are often rigid. This causes a lack of initiative and discourages creativity among employees as ideas have to go through multiple of layers of chain of commands for it to be recognised and approved. Also, a compartmentalization of activities can also occur in a bureaucratic organisation. Jobs are often delegated into specific categories, which then limits people from performing jobs that employees are actually capable of performing. Max Weber, German sociologist, social theorist, and economist, explicated the theory of bureaucracy in which he details the monocratic bureaucracy “as an ideal form that maximized rationality” (Bolman & Deal, 2008, p. 48). He provided his most complete exposition of theory in his 1922 tome Economy and Society (Casey, 2004). This classic form of bureaucracy is characterized by the following (a) well-defined official functions; (b) specialization of function; (c) clearly defined hierarchy of offices; (d) rules governing performance, which require training to administer; (e) impersonal treatment of clients, in that all are treated equally; (f) merit as the basis of promotion or appointment; (g) compensation based on rank; (h) separation of personal and company assets and interests; (i) discipline and control of daily work; (j) files and record keeping for decisions, acts, and rules (Bolman & Deal, 2008; O’Connor, 2011). There are numerous shorthand versions of Weber’s theory including Harmon and Mayer (1986) in Organization Theory for Public Administration and Heady (2001) in Public Administration: A Comparative Perspective (O’Connor, 2011).
Bureaucracy is a specific type of secondary group that are everywhere in one's life. Max Weber identified Bureaucracy with six different types of characteristics. Areas in my life that have been Mcdonaldized can first fit in with the Specialization part. Specialization is where all members of a bureaucracy are assigned specialized roles and tools, an example of this in my life can fit in with voluntary work I do in hospitals. Everyone who voluntaries to work each have their own roles to help out with. When I go to stores or to restaurants Hierarchy is something I see the most. The reason as to why is because both stores and restaurants have supervision by higher-ranking managers and bosses. Another area in my life that has been Mcdonaldized is my school. Organizations in today’s world need to adapt and overcome many obstacles that are predictable as well as unpredictable. Max Weber outlines the five basic principles of bureaucracy which are as follows: The Division of Labor, Hierarchy of Authority, Written Rules and Regulations, Impersonality Principal, and Technical Qualifications. These basic principals were designed to maximize productivity and assert authority over subordinates in the workforce. An organization’s structure can affect its efficiency and productivity. The two main management theories are the Classic Theory and Theory X. Classical theory is defined as a management theory of a large organization in which management is led by intuition to motivate and control employees (Hamilton, 2008 p. 41). The Classic Theory can be divided into two large subgroups, scientific managers and bureaucratic theorists. Scientific manager’s focus is on reducing production costs while bureaucratic theorists focus is on administrative efficiency (Hamilton, 2008 p. 43). Weber believed that bureaucracy created stable, and predictable actions and outcomes because it allowed organizations to work in a rational manner, like a machine, and helped account for the fact that humans had only limited intelligence. Though Weber discussed the perfect model of an organization, bureaucracy allows for even imperfect organizations to function in a more reliable and predictable way because it’s structure controls how individuals behave.
While sociologists have often studied social change, Max Weber was particularly focused on understanding the progression of rationalization. Many of his works detail his analysis of the growth of rationality in the Western world, as well as the development of bureaucracies as a sign of this process. Although his argument that the modern world is marked by an increase in both does provide a valuable and multifaceted view, it does have its problems. Namely, Weber’s conceptualization of rationality fails to properly separate the different forms, which weakens his subsequent argument on the growth of rationality. In contrast, Weber is highly effective in determining the characteristics of bureaucracies, which allows for a strong discussion on increasing bureaucratization.

Shafritz states that classical organization theory was the first theory of its kind, and serves as the foundation of other schools organization theory (Shafritz, Ott, & Jang, 2011, p. 32).
