Perception of the Mind: Ambrose Bierce Style Surprises can alter the appearance of a novel based on the outcome of the situation. In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, Bierce hides the actuality of the pain and agonizing death Peyton endures, until the final sentence, “Peyton Farquhar was dead; his body, with a broke neck, swung gently from side to side beneath the timbers of Owl Creek Bridge” (Bierce 204). Bierce’s language seems to be clear, and motionless, almost unemotional. Within the story, “…the sentences are straightforward. The reader has no reason to question the authenticity or veracity of the story” (Holladay, Hal, ebscohost.com). “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” shows that perception of time can alter a person’s appearance of the action transpiring, and the surprise of Peyton Farquhar’s death is a model of how people can become deceived depending on the occurring situation. Bierce plans each provoking thought Farquhar determines before the event of the hanging. This strategy, “…is not mere trickery; rather it is a logical, calculated effort to force the reader into the realization that the mind makes its own reality…” (Holladay, Hal, ebscohost.com).
