The workplace has its significance for several students in the United States. Part time work and college are institutions that have their impact on students. It becomes a true struggle when students have several responsibilities on top of studying for their courses. Personally, I know this is true for me at my current internship at a consulting research firm. It’s a great honor to be able to work and have an internship at the same time. However, recently there have been troubles with my internship managers that have lead to further speculation. There were several inconsistencies that didn’t make sense from my perspective. Eventually, there was a holistic meeting to discuss possible termination. My speculation only increased from this occurrence because of its impact. The managers operated in a manner that displayed several inconsistencies. They had their styles of managing conflicts such as confrontational styles. Also, their methods of enhancing group and team leadership had process functions that were inconsistent. There were patterns found in the group and team dynamics such as norms that were ambiguous. My managers demonstrated a side that made it difficult to interpret. This is mostly due to the fact that were several examples of problems that didn’t make sense. It’s vital to understand possible conflicts in the workplace and still manage to navigate the situation appropriately.

In the final analysis, workers in new positions may come across certain obstacles in the workplace. These instances could be isolated and have specific implications. Personally, I feel the management in the office could have been better. Some decisions they made could be interpreted as norms and favoritism. However, there may just be more information that i’m not completely sure about. I must continue to keep in mind that this internship is very selective and a wonderful opportunity for anyone. It would be best to adhere and comply with the institution as much as possible.

My internship began with a short orientation of KPMG’s office located in the Wells Fargo Building of downtown Minneapolis. After some introductions and a few training sessions that outlined what was expected of us in terms of the rules and laws we were required to follow including disclosure of client and firm information and independence affidavits, for example, we were briefed on our trip to Orlando for National Internship Training which would take place the following work day. Training for Partnership-focused federal tax interns would last a whole week filled with events and educational seminars that would introduce us to tax fundamentals and software tutorials that would be helpful during our time with KPMG. “Take This Internship and Shove It” by Anya Kamenetz is about the declining state of jobs for new college graduates or current college students. Anya Kamenetz is attempting to prove that internships, particularly unpaid internships, are part of the problem of new graduates finding employment in their field of study. Kamenetz is also trying to prove internships are harmful to the job market in general. Kamenetz describes internships as “fake jobs” and states internships cause low wages and decline in young workers being part of a union. When an employer can hire someone for free he or she is more likely to do so instead of spending company money on a paid employee. Employers get away with these practices because with an already troubling job market, new graduates worry about finding jobs in their field. Colleges are either requiring students to participate in an internship to graduate or are pushing that internships are the gateway to careers. Kamenetz points out that two-thirds of college students are receiving loans to help pay for their education and it is harmful to the individual to work for free when that time is essential to make money to pay for living and school expenses.
Internships completed by students in certain degree programs are quite popular in most colleges and universities. An internship is used so classroom based learning in a degree program can be applied to practical situations in the real world (Jordan, Burns, Bedard & Barringer, 2007). At first, I was very skeptical about the whole concept of an internship. Given the size of Providence, an organization that spans five states and employs over 82,000 people, I felt like a drop of water in a vast ocean. The idea of learning anything in such environment seemed unrealistic, let alone contributing to the organization’s growth. Most of all, I was conflicted by the notion of giving 200 hours of my life away without any sort of monetary compensations. In addition to incurring an implicit and explicit cost during my internship at Providence, after doing calculations I came to a conclusion that I would have made at least $2000 over the course of ten weeks if I were to take a part-time minimum wage job. From the economic feasibility perspective, I was losing money instead of making money. At the time, it seemed a preposterous idea to continue doing what I was doing, but in retrospect, the long-term impact of internship on my future career and personal development is priceless.

You must remain flexible to other people’s wants, needs, direction, criticism, schedules, moods, temperament, and a myriad of other things in life. If there is one thing in life that will never change it is the fact that everything is going to change! There is nothing you can do to stop it, so the quicker you learn how to adapt to the changes the better off you will be. The ability to change your approach to dealing with conflict better prepares you to face the interpersonal challenges that will eventually come your way. I believe it is important to also remember that you cannot win every battle with every person you encounter. I have learned so much from this internship process and many things have gotten me ready for what I experience and other not as much. There have been many positives that have happened and other negative that have made me stronger as a person and stronger in my faith.
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation.
