An Essay On Euthanasia

Euthanasia comes from the Greek language and precisely means “good death.” Throughout history and in present times, euthanasia is the practice of ending another person’s life prematurely in order to stop the individuals pain or suffering. Euthanasia can be active or passive and can be classified as voluntary, non-voluntary and involuntary. Active euthanasia is when death occurs by the use of lethal drugs autonomously, or, with the aid of a Doctor. Passive Euthanasia is when treatment needed to maintain life is avoided or stopped, leading to person’s death. Euthanasia is typically requested by individuals with terminally ill diseases to escape their suffering, individuals who are ill and feel they are burdens to their loved ones, or, people

Oregon, Vermont, Washington, New Mexico and Montana are the only U.S states to legalize it. In ancient times, it was common for doctors to take the lives of their patients with different poisonous preparation. However, it caused a lot of problems in the medical practice. The Greek Physician, Hippocrates, a teacher of medicine realized it as a huge concern. Ultimately, Hippocrates made his students take an oath which basically made them pledge to not give my patients any harmful thing even if they requested it. In doing so, it advanced the separation between killing during medical practice, and progress. The advantage of the oath became known as the Hippocratic Oath, and became the standard for medical practitioners during those times to take the Hippocratic Oath, and has been in practice for over two thousand years. Today, Doctors have a problem with euthanasia because they have sworn an oath that does not allow them to take part in the killing of people, and, it is their duty to help patients maintain or regain

However, while most try to avoid it as long as they possibly can, euthanasia offers people the opportunity to end their lives sooner. In the end, people will take the opportunity and follow through with it for their own benefits, disregarding the moral values of society. Voluntarily euthanasia should not be permitted because it will raise many issues in society. For instance, people may possibly be treated as a means and nothing more. Or perhaps, those who are a responsible for their relative or loved one under physician care can possibly be pressured into accepting to euthanasia as the last resort, regardless if they want it or not. In other words, Human life will be at stake. The value and sanctity of life will lose its importance. Even if someone wishes for it they should keep their faith in God and continue living as this suffering will be rewarded in the life after. Besides, one never knows when a new treatment will be available to cure a terminal illness. Euthanasia should never be legalized as it would remove the act of taking a life from God, to humanity. Human life should be respected regardless of age, gender, religion, race, or potential for
