Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering techniques to biology and medicine to improve healthcare and medical products. Since their work mainly consists of research and development, biomedical engineers work in manufacturing, universities, and research facilities. There are not many educational requirements or job experience needed to enter this field. However, biomedical engineers often benefit from having a large number of degrees and work experience.
Education to become a biomedical engineer may take anywhere from above four years, since it depends on which degrees are pursued. To prepare themselves for the long road of education ahead, high school students will find that the best training for this career will be from high school science, math, and lab classes. These classes can include biology, chemistry, physics, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, computer programming and mechanical drawing. Since biomedical engineering also involves writing journals about research and presenting works to colleagues, students will also benefit English composition, history, and foreign language classes.
An internship in a science laboratory or local university will also benefit students. This will get the student familiar with tasks and equipment that they may encounter as a biomedical engineer. Learning how to write computer code can also be beneficial. Biomedical engineers gather much of their research from gene samples from 1000s of patients. With computer code, this research can be done in a matter of seconds.

It can take several years to become a biomedical engineer, but the benefits received are arguably worth the long years of education. With new discoveries every day, it is impossible for workers in this career to become bored or tired of the work.
