Dr. Sally Ride is an icon that many women have looked up to, especially female astronauts. Sally Ride was the first American woman to take flight in a spacecraft, be a part of the NASA space program, advocate for women in the field of science and wrote her own books. So with these wonderful accomplishments, what led Sally Ride to become an influential role model? Well, Ride was born on May 26th, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. Her parents are Dale Burdell Ride, a political science professor, and Carol Joyce Ride, a psychology counselor. From a very young age, Ride had shown great skill and talent in both tennis and her academics. The Sally Ride Science program is based in San Diego, California and is also partnered with the University of California at San Diego. Well after Ride’s passing, this company has thrived to help encourage and educate the generation of tomorrow. The Sally Ride Science website states that, “The goal is to help educators build students’ STEM literacy and make connections between what students are learning and the STEM fields that are expected to experience rapid job growth in the coming decades” (Sally Ride Science). In addition to the main program, the Sally Ride Science Junior Academy was launched in 2016 to help middle and high school students participate in STEAM organizations and activities throughout the San Diego area. Sally Ride’s influence not only helped to benefitted these student, but she helped to break down a barrier for women everywhere. Sally Ride changed society’s views on women, and made it into American history books. She impacted modern day space exploration and young women by being the first American woman in space as shown by her work for NASA and her dedication toward young women and girls pursuing careers in science and math.
In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Once you put your mind towards a goal, it is pretty impossible to fail at achieving it. As a leader you must set goals for yourself, and in return these goals will benefit you in the long run. Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the greatest leaders of her time. She is not just known for being the first lady, but also her achievements and hard work for social justice. Her leadership can be viewed and learned for many years to come.

Margaret Floy Washburn was a role model and highly respected figure to many women. Washburn was born in 1871 in Harlem, New York City to Elizabeth Floy Washburn and Reverend Francis. Margaret Floy Washburn was an only child, and she explained the "blessed privilege of an only child to be undisturbed when at leisure". She started her academic learning at the age of seven, but knew how to read and write far before. At the age of eleven she attended public school for the first time, and by the age of fifteen, she graduated high school.

Dr. Sally Kristen Ride was born in Encino, California on May 26th, 1951. Growing up, Sally was considered a tomboy. She spent most of her time playing football and baseball with the neighborhood boys. As Sally grew older, she found a love for tennis and science fiction novels. Bessie Coleman, the child of a southern, African American family, had become one of the most widely know women and African Americans in history. "Brave Bessie", as she had become known for, encountered the double hardship of racial and gender prejudice in early 20th-century but, she conquered many challenges and became the first African American woman to acquire a pilot's license. She not only enthused crowds with her talents as a barnstormer, but she has become a great inspiration for the women and African Americans. Her being in the air threatened contemporary stereotypes.
