In school, students are faced with different oppositions and mixed emotions. Seniors enter their last year of high school with hopes of fun, unforgettable nights, but forget that grades and attendance are required to be maintained. An epidemic of laziness and irresponsibility has struck seniors worldwide. This condition is known as senioritis. Common signs and symptoms of senioritis include poor grades, increased absences, and fits of abnormal behavior. The causes and effects of senioritis depend upon each individual. Senioritis is a rising affliction in today’s students, and the effects of the unhealthy conditions places heavy strains on one’s academic career. David Conley, the CEO of the Center of Education Policy at the University of Oregon, Their efforts include providing dual enrollment during high school, early graduation, increasing the workload, internships, and mandatory senior projects. Seniors, who suffer from senioritis, often are not thinking about the future so by allowing students to enroll in dual programs gives them the opportunity to begin college courses. Dual enrollment motivates students to start their next chapter in life. “Advocates say dual enrollment can help boost graduation rates and reduce the need for remediation in college” (Puente 2). Another solution for senioritis could be to offer internships during the school year. Students are more likely to participate in activities that build or share the same passion. If given the choice, students would choose to volunteer at a local hospital, especially if going into the medical field, rather than sitting in a music appreciation class to pass time. William Arthur Ward quotes, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” A school system that inspires their students to grow in their passion is probably less likely to experience high rates of senioritis within their students. Many educational experts “suggests an internship or career-exploration opportunity to motivate seniors and to help them prepare to make informed decisions about their career and education goals” (Articles 1). For example, during my high school career, I took health classes my sophomore and junior year to prepare myself in taking the advanced health class offered. Once I reached the advanced class, I began off-campus clinicals. These clinicals I attended fueled my passion for the medical field, leading me to focus on my current studies. Anxiety. Regret. Frustration. Restlessly glancing at the clock, cringing every time I do. Staring at a blinking cursor, waiting for inspiration. Spending a restless night trying to squeeze out something to turn in the next day. This is a process known all too well by me, and most high schoolers in America, one known as: Procrastination. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. It’s a tempting prospect, putting off your responsibilities to do something enjoyable, but it should be avoided at every possibility. Procrastination causes your grades to suffer, causes your mental health to suffer, and causes you to learn bad habits for the future.
The idea of having to go to school every day for at least twelve years conjures a lot of different emotions – some may be excited about the idea of learning new things and exploring their minds, while others may be exasperated just by imagining the curriculum they must complete during this time span. The influence of how many credit hours someone can get while taking dual enrollment courses is also another reason many are motivated to go to college. They have a sense that they can finish college earlier than other people. Students can take as many dual classes that are offered at their school, which will make them want more since they have already started their journey through the college life in high school. Taking Dual enrollment classes help some people find that they are confident in their ability to complete college work. Some people believe that it is detrimental because it will exhaust the students and it will affect their extracurricular activities outside of school. This is a valid point, but some people are more worried about their education than they are of playing or doing something outside of school. Senioritis is defined by the “sickness” of high school seniors. It has the biggest impact on students during the second semester of senior year and it is characterized by the lack of motivation to stay engaged. Many of the soon-to-be graduates tend to slack off by the end of the school year. Students who are experiencing senioritis do not have the energy to even get up in the morning, so they surely do not have the enthusiasm to go to school and be told what to do for eight hours straight. That is the main reason why students at this time of the year tend to skip more and more classes. This results in a drop of their GPA, it enervates their overall academic record, and may interfere with the admission to a chosen college or university. The College Board website claims that “every year, colleges rescind offers of admission, put students on academic probation or alter financial aid packages as a result of ‘senioritis’.”

Just because he or she is not going to go into business or chemistry or whatever the class in question may be does not mean that it could not benefit them to investigate as many subjects as possible. Getting ready to leave for college is often one of the most difficult times for a young adult. Many people are not ready to take that next step into their future. However, this past summer, as I approached my senior year, I was lucky enough to take a trip up the coast of California to go to a National Student Leadership Conference and prepare for that life changing experience. This camp was based on medicine and health care. I received a chance to work with professional doctors and examine what a life in medicine would be like. It was, by far, the greatest experience of my life, and it has definitely formed me into the person I am today. Before this camp, I knew I was not ready to proceed with that next step in my life. But now, I know I am more responsible and knowledgeable to go to college on my own.
Presently, my extracurricular and academic interests are combined in my two year Health Science class. The class provides real-life medical situations that I may come in contact with in the future. Like any health science class, we study the body, in both its’ functional and dysfunctional state. This survey class also includes an introduction to equipment, medical protocol, and ethical issues. A sense of teamwork guides our procedures. Next semester, I will study at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Ramstein High School’s Career Practicum program. After initial on-the-job application of classroom learning, we will work with patients, supervised by the hospital staff. Living so close to a hospital that services thousands of seriously injured patients every year provides opportunities that other students lack, even in their college programs.
I am a senior who wishes to progress with their education. I have a head start in college as I have had access to dual admission in both a technical college and my local college. I wish to continue my education by taking part in my local college South Georgia State College, and continue at Armstrong Atlantic State University. I plan to enter the healthcare field as a nurse, and then consider becoming a physician assistant. I hope to use the knowledge acquired in these fields to help the needy in my country of origin by constructing a local infirmary.
Everyone has daily burdens and responsibilities that they would prefer to avoid rather than begin. For college students that burden becomes anything relating to college academics, from homework assignments, to essays due next week, or projects. Are the new standards and expectations the world has for teenagers really creating monsters? The amount of stress that is put on students these days between trying to balance school, homework, extra curricular activities, social lives, sleep and a healthy lifestyle is being considered a health epidemic (Palmer, 2005). Students are obsessing over getting the grades that are expected of them to please those that push them, and in return, lose sleep and give up other aspects of their lives that are important to them, such as time with friends and family, as well as activities that they enjoy. The stress that they endure from the pressures of parents, teachers, colleges, and peers has many physical as well as mental effects on every student, some more harmful than others. The extreme pressure on students to get perfect grades so that they will be accepted into a college has diminished the concept of actually learning and has left the art of “financing the system” in order to succeed in its place (Palmer, 2005).
