This new process technology enabled Intel to increase the number of circuits while simultaneously being able to reduce the cost-per-bit by tenfold. Virtualization technologies provide isolation of operating systems from hardware. This separation enables hardware resource sharing. With virtualization, a system pretends to be two or more of the same system [23]. Most modern operating systems contain a simplified system of virtualization. Each running process is able to act as if it is the only thing running. The CPUs and memory are virtualized. If a process tries to consume all of the CPU, a modern operating system will pre-empt it and allow others their fair share. Similarly, a running process typically has its own virtual address space that the operating system maps to physical memory to give the process the illusion that it is the only user of RAM.

The author gives an example of a conference room wherein different devices like projectors, computers, etc. can be added and disconnected from a computer system that handles all operations of the room. The computer will need to shutdown in order to install software updates and additional features. A possible scenario wherein such a computer never shuts down and continues to perform is ideal. This will allow systems to harmonize impeccably into human environment and achieve ‘embodied virtuality’. The author also mentions an alternative approach where micro-kernel operating systems [1] accommodate the dynamic needs of pervasive computing. Another suggestion by the author is to change the protocols used by operating systems to interact with applications. [1]
Operating systems work in two ways, by managing the hardware and software resources of the computer. Managing the hardware and software resources, is important because different programs and input methods go through the central processing unit (CPU) and both take up memory, storage and input/output bandwidth for their own purposes. Secondly, providing a consistent application interface, is critical if there is more than one of a specific type of computer using the same operating system, or if the computer’s hardware can be updated. A consistent application program interface (API) creates a way for a software developer to write an application on one computer and know that it will run on another of the same type, even if the memory and storage are different between computers.
