The Bishop’s Wife was directed by Henry Koster in 1947. Cary Grant stars as an angel sent to help a newly appointed bishop played by David Niven and his wife played by Loretta Young. The story line is nothing but typical for its time. Niven’s character is having issues raising the funds to build a much needed addition for his church. The wealthy upper class is offering the needed funds in exchange for greedy control and all the say in how it is built. While trying to stay true to his beliefs, the new and young bishop is finding it hard to resist the promised funds of the well off members of the church. While struggling to raise the necessary funds, he finds all himself left with very little time for his wife and daughter. As his family is left feeling neglected and his wife is missing their old home in the poorer part of town. Just when the situation seems as if it cannot get worse; an angel is sent to save the day. While it may have been a hit of its time, I found this film to be extremely dull and lacking in excitement. It was a struggle to sit through 190 minutes of Niven and Young’s unconvincing “acting” in this film. Grant on the other hand was as charming as an angel could be. Although I could not help but think how odd and suspicious a person would seem if they were to act like that in modern day society. All in all I am unimpressed and would not recommend this movie to anyone of younger generations. I found it nearly impossible to sit through it and pay attention without dozing off. Staying awake and keeping from day dreaming was a challenge. On the other hand giving this film the benefit of the doubt, it was interesting to see the extreme differences between films of that age and modern films. I found myself wondering if... ... middle of paper ... ...innocent from being in the hands of the evil is a much better cause than raising funds to build a church. I feel as if I would be a somewhat dark angel in a way. I say this because for every child I would save, I would want to punish the one’s inflicting harm upon them a thousand times over. I would want to be a kind of mercenary who would take redemption my own hands. I would want to make sure that those who inflict pain and suffering upon the innocent would come face to face with a punishment that unimaginable. I would want them to feel the fear and horror in which they caused to a magnitude. The act of harming a child is unforgivable and cannot be justified. There is a special place in hell for those who can bring themselves to lay an unkind hand upon the very kids they brought into this earth to protect. If I was an angel I would be sure they were sent there.
