Tom is a slave at Simon Legree’s plantation. He is a believer in the Bible, and he has his hope fixated upon God. Despite all the problems and beatings he has received, he refuses to give up his faith ad belief. His master Simon is not happy at all with his behavior. He, therefore, finds every reason to beat him up with the intention of eventually breaking him. The hatred began when Tom refused to beat up a fellow slave. Despite the troubles and tribulations, Tom has already made up his mind to remain faithful even unto death. After Cassy and Emmeline escape, Legree asks Tom for their whereabouts. Moreover, the narrator remains in omniscient point of view to make readers know what others think about Tom: "Her voice was often heard in wordy warfare with her husband; and his face sometimes showed signs that their conflicts were not confined to words. No one ventured, however, to interfere between them; the lonely wayfarer shrunk within himself at the horrid clamor and clapper clawing; eyed the den of discord askance, and hurried on his way, rejoicing, if a bachelor, in his celibacy. After reading this passage, readers gain a bad impression of Tom.
Tom Shiflet’s sinful nature is highlighted by both the Christian symbols present in the story and in the changing weather that accompanies his immoral act. A quiet life with Lucynell was not meant to be for Tom Shiflet, much to the dismay of Mrs. Crater. While Tom’s actions are by no means justified, one cannot overlook the fact that both these women were forcing Tom to change into something he was not. Tom was never meant to live the quiet married life, he was a drifter, a backcountry traveler who stopped to admire the sunset, and left under a cloud.
Tom is always looking for ways to earn freedom. One of the main plots in the story is Tom’s quest for freedom. Freedom gives Tom a sense of accomplishment after he finishes a deed or task.
Tom is perhaps the most vain and inhuman of the characters, always lusting after more of the forbidden fruit, never having his full share. Even when the knowledge of it reaches his wife, Tom still returns to his cuckolding ways. Early in the book when Daisy explains how unhappy her life truly is, she describes the feeling she had after the birth of her first daughter saying, “Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling...” (31). In that moment readers are finally privy to the ugly, greedy, truth that is Tom, out philandering for pleasures purely his own, while his wife gives birth to their child.
His master wants to take him away from Eliza and is forcing him to marry within the plantation. George is a hardworking slave and his master does not seem to like the praises he would get. His master likes to torment him and make his life not worth living because George is a slave. When George expresses his feelings to Eliza, she tells him to believe in God and pray. George, however, concludes that his “heart’s full of bitterness; [he] can’t trust in God” (Stowe III). George’s master’s son is also like his father. The son, Tom, is a cruel little boy because he beats the horses and he beats George. The moment when Casy says, “You don’t know what you’re a-doin,” and the aggressive man, who was afraid of the monster, the fear and the anger boiling into wrath, and the desperation of surviving, hits him in the head and kills him with a white pickhandle (Steinbeck 386). Tom’s companion and closest friend, who shared his thoughts and beliefs and gave him advice, is murdered in front of him. Tom must have been into deep shock that he didn’t notice the men with the aggressive man trying to kill him. After being hit and injured, he hides and goes back to his family in the cabin. He realizes that he needs to leave before someone in the farm finds him. Tom wants to leave since he wants to protect his family and to recollect his thoughts and feelings about Casy’s death. He goes away temporarily only to get into the truck with his family and go to the boxcar camp. At the boxcar camp, Tom is stuck in the same plight as last time at the farm. Using the time of being away from his family, he must have been pondering over what Casy must have thought before he was murdered and why he said his last words. Tom must have put himself in Casy’s shoes to figure out what he meant by the people having one huge soul and how there is no sin and virtue. Contemplating in the dark for a long time, Tom has an epiphany about the Oversoul and how the migrants who are subjected to the monster’s tyranny should unite to overcome the relentless cruelty and oppression. He tells his mother, “I’ll be ever’where—wherever you look. Wherever they’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever they’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. An’ when our folks eat the stuff they raise an’ live in the houses they build—why, I’ll be there” (Steinbeck 419). From this, Tom recognizes where he stands
When he told her, she wasn’t content that he turned it down because they could’ve had money. So the following day she went out to the forest to go look for the devil. He waited to full day to go look for her because she took the pots and pans with her when she went to go meet up with the devil. He didn’t want to find her because he missed her. He wanted to find her because she had the pots that he could sell and make money off of. When he was walking in the forest on the look for her, he saw that her check apron was hanging on the branch of the tree. “Let us get hold of the property and we will endeavor to do without the woman”( Irving 158). When he took the apron off of the branch, he saw that nothing was in it but his wife’s heart and liver tied up in it. After employing a group of men to track down Eliza, Tom and Haley leave for New Orleans. On the way down the river in a steamer boat, Tom befriends a young girl named Eva and saves her from drowning when she falls overboard. Eva’s father, St. Clare, buys Tom to be Eva’s personal servant. Over time, the Tom and Eva grow very close. Eva, like her father, is very kind and devoted to her slaves. She even transforms the life of a hardened, young slave girl named Topsy.

Tom is a black man accused of raping Mayella Violet Ewell, who is a pauper ranked just above the Negroes. A defense attorney named Atticus Finch was appointed to Tom by Judge Taylor. Atticus was chosen because he was one of the only men that would defend Tom, and help him gain back his freedom the right way. Atticus is a Caucasian lawyer who try’s his best to fight for Tom’s innocence. During the trial Mr. Gilmer had the chance to question Tom and in the book Lee writes “‘You did all this chopping and work from sheer goodness, boy?”... “Tried to help her I says.”...... “You’re a mighty good fellow, it seems--did all this for not one penny?”..“Yes, suh. I felt sorry for her....” (pg 263-264 ) This is saying that Tom Robinson him being a Negro and all still put everything aside and showed kindness to Mayella and aided her when no one else would. Tom, one of the main characters, is hitchhiking home when he stumbles upon a preacher by the name of Jim Casey. Jim baptized Tom, but now he is no longer preaching because he has found that everything is holy and man needs no preacher. His initials are J.C. which are the same as Jesus Christ. Jim shows similar characteristics to Jesus Christ. He sacrifices himself for Tom. Tom has caused a deputy to loose his suspect and is said to be under arrest, but Casey steps in and takes the blame. “It was me, alright” (p.364). Casey is taken by two deputies, but appears to be proud because he knows he has done the right thing. “Between his guards Casey sat proudly, his head up and the stringy muscles of his neck prominent” (p.364). He gives up his freedom so the Joad’s can accomplish their dreams as a family. Tom then meets Muley Graves, an old neighbor. Muley shows animal like characteristics and acts like a mule. AN IMAGINATIVE AND MISCHIEVOUS BOY named Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother, Sid, in the Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. After playing hooky from school on Friday and dirtying his clothes in a fight, Tom is made to whitewash the fence as punishment on Saturday. At first, Tom is disappointed by having to forfeit his day off. However, he soon cleverly persuades his friends to trade him small treasures for the privilege of doing his work. He trades these treasures for tickets given out in Sunday school for memorizing Bible verses and uses the tickets to claim a Bible as a prize. He loses much of his glory, however, when, in response to a question to show off his knowledge, he incorrectly answers that the first two disciples were David and Goliath.
Tom is a character many people in this generation can relate to. Although the play was written many years ago Tom is just like any other millennial from this day and age. He basically hates his job because it’s not fun. He can’t cope with the fact that he has to pick up all the slack his father left behind. He even seems to think that running away will fix everything. All of these things are very common in society today.

In waking, Tom finds comfort in his dream and is finally at peace with his forced existence. “And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark, /And got with our bags & our brushes to work” (21-22). Reality has returned, the dark is back but a newfound acceptance and hope has replaced the despair. “Tom was happy & warm; / So if all do their duty they need not fear harm”, (23-24). These lines infer that there is still hope that society will see the error of their ways and put an end to their suffering and if not, they will be released to a better place in death. Society will someday realize that what they robbed these children of was immoral and wrong and they will stop the injustice and put an end to child labor.
