Mrs. Carlisle used motivation in several different areas, but the one I enjoyed the most was at the beginning of the day. She would go around to each row of desks and have whoever wanted to volunteer tell the class something they were looking forward to or something interesting that had happened to them. Each student would be filled with joy when it was their turn to talk. I heard stories from birthday parties to bats in the house. I found it very fun and entertaining for both the students and the teacher. It also is a great way for Mrs. Carlisle to get to know each of her students. Another interesting activity I witnessed mrs. Carlisle using motivation was also in the morning. She would have all of the students sing songs and dance. I thought this was a great technique to get all of the students awake and excited for the day to come. She would also join in on the dancing to show the students that she 's a part of the family as well. Her participation is a huge factor in the students motivation. Due to her enthusiasm and kindness, I feel she has done a great job using motivation in the classroom. …show more content…
I have not visited Mrs. Carlisle’s classroom and not seen the smart board in use. I have mostly seen it used with powerpoint in the morning hours of school. Every morning the students sing along to song about what is expected of them in the classroom with regards to behavior. If the weather keeps the children inside for recess then they watch a movie on the smartboard. The children usually get to decide what movie they want to watch. I think it’s important that the children get their time outside, but if it 's not safe I feel the movie is a great option. Overall, I feel that technology was worked into the lesson plan just right. Sometimes I feel that people take advantage of the resource, Mrs. Carlisle’s classroom does a great job of not overdoing
By incorporating the theories of Piaget and Maslow into lesson planning, I can choose realistic and meaningful instructional strategies and designate assignments at the appropriate challenge level. My goal is to motivate my students to strive for their best and provide them an environment where they can successfully prepare for college and life. Mary Kay Ash was phenomenal at motivation and said it best: “Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.” (Ash). Knowing that each class will be different and that what works for one class may not work for another will aid me in being an effective, efficient
“Motivation is a complex part of human psychology and behavior that influences how individuals choose to invest their time, how much energy they exert in any given task, how they think and feel about the task, and how long they persist at the task” (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). The biggest question educators face in today’s classroom is what motivates a student to do something and why? Virtually all students are motivated in one way or another. Research of student motivation suggests a theory that emphasizes a social-cognitive perspective. The cognition of students regarding academic work are influenced by social factors, such as messages from the teacher about the difficulty of the task, the perceived abilities of classmates, and the information about the importance of learning the material (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). In this paper the focus will primarily be on those elements within the classroom that influence student motivation and engagement.
Motivation in college is different. For starters, as a student, I have to be self-motivated. My parents are not here to make sure I get my work done and go to class. I have to find motivation in myself to go to class and get my work done.
Achievement Motivation (also termed need for achievement, N-Ach) refers to an individual's desire for significant accomplishment, mastering of skills to meet high standards of excellence. It includes the intense, prolonged and repeated efforts to accomplish something difficult, to work with singleness of purpose towards a high and distant goal and to have the determination to win.
According to the text, “ Therefore, motivation to learn can be defined as the psychological process that direct and sustain student’s behavior toward learning.” (Moreno 328) In other words, motivation is a mental desire that comes from your mind when you find something familiar that matches with your comfort level towards learning. For example, when is child motivated? They are motivated when they are given the activities they are actually interested in. If the lesson is out of what they expected it to be, then, automatically they lose their interest on doing it. One claim that can be made is, Effective Learning occurs when teacher promotes Intrinsic Motivation in the classroom. “Intrinsic Motivation is defined as the
Yes, i know how to use my Google calendar, but most days I just prefer paper. Even though I would love to say I am a digital native, I know am not. I am a digital immigrant who still goes back to paper and traditional ways of teaching and learning at times because that is how I was brought up. I use a SMARTBoard on a daily basis, but I still feel a jolt of excitement when I can use a chalkboard. Yet, this immigrant background helps me understand the teachers who resist technology. I recognize that change is difficult. This chapter will discuss many of these
All effective educators need to find ways to motivate their students. The kids that fill our classrooms have different strengths and weaknesses. It is critical that teachers recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their students so they can use the right classroom management strategies to motivate their kids. In this particular case, the student named Jodie is inattentive and uninterested and neither the teacher intern or classroom teacher have a clue how to handle this situation. Ms. Marcia Thomas, who is the young intern feels that Jodie is just a problem child that lacks motivation and there is nothing she can do for this particular student. Ms. Thomas and the lead teacher Ms. Egan both lack the needed classroom management strategies that are necessary to motivate and engage students in a positive learning environment.
When wondering if the use of technology has strengthened the effectiveness of her as a teacher and if she thinks it is beneficial for the students she thinks it has strengthened her teaching ability and also believes there it is beneficial for the students. She does think it has because the kids are able to follow along and it doesn’t have to be written on the board for the kids to copy they are able to listen and write a few notes of their own instead of trying to copy everything she is writing on the board. Yes, and no. Yes, in the way that for the students that understand the material they are able to move forward and get their work done without having to wait for others to ...
Although some teachers still use regular boards, most teachers use smart boards to teach. These boards are like ordinary boards except these are controlled by a remote control pen. By just clicking on the board questions can be written in a variety of ways and in any color you want. The final piece of tech that is mainly used in the classroom is a variety of websites that provide tests, quizzes, and assignments that students can access with a certain username and password. Research has found that all types of technology are changing the way teachers teach forever (usnews.com).
In the article by Chris Preston and Lee Mowbray (2008) a kindergarten classroom was the choice of installation of the interactive hardware. The justification for using this technology with Kindergarten children was their short attention span and the ability of the interactive whiteboard to keep them actively involved promoting learning (Preston and Mowbray 2...
...em to look at several elements that affect their student’s motivation and ask why and how this affects them in the first place. After that, I would tell him to arrange a lesson plan utilizing structural factors such as patterns and sequences, with a view to individual application and the group dynamics of the class. By doing so, the teacher can grow in his students a sense of shared motivation guided by these structural factors, so that each interrelated lesson are remembered. These lesson plans must also consider the effective ways of instilling discipline in the students. The teacher must allow for response from the students so that he may understand the students’ perception of reality, value systems, and will, so that he may understand how to motivate his students more. By understanding the motivations of his students, he can bring about a change in their lives.
Student motivation can be affected by several factors. These elements include parent involvement, teacher enthusiasm, rewards, peers, the learner’s environment, personal experiences, personal interests of the student, and self-esteem and self-image.
During my time at this field placement, I noticed how Mrs. Anderson uses technology on a daily basis and wanted to give it a try myself. Students seem to enjoy it very much and from what I have seen, Mrs. Anderson gets a great response from the students as far as scores go. Technology in the classroom can be used for different types of assessments as well whether it be for a presentation, test or online activity. As a 21st century pre-service teacher, it is very important for me to know how to properly use technology in the classroom and how to successfully incorporate it into my curriculum. “Teachers must learn to use technology and must allow it to change their present teaching paradigm. This is not an easy task because change can seem intimidating and threatening” (Bitner, 1). This quote sums up exactly what I should be working on in terms of incorporating technology into the classroom. If I begin to use it now then I will be less intimidated in the
In the past, technology was something that was only used in our homes and by the wealthy. However, this has become a thing of the past. Classrooms have become more interactive and lessons seem to be more engaging. Students have been given the opportunity to use Smart Boards, document cameras, projectors, and wireless slates. In order for our students to feel comfortable, when using the different technologies, they must have some amount of background knowledge. If a student is not given this background knowledge, they will have more difficulty utilizing the technology than someone who has the background knowledge. Teachers in classrooms today must also have some type of knowledge of the technology being used. A great way to build this knowledge is to attend training sessions that your district may be holding, and utilize the technology as much as possible.
This day and time motivation seems to be harder to achieve. The use of homework passes and free time would be used as a form of motivation. Students, young and old, appreciate rewards even if it is only verbal praises. Some form of recognition creates a desire to achieve even more. Notes written by the teacher on returned homework or test papers may give inspiration to a shy student. This is also a way in letting the student know that they are an individual who is capable of achieving great things if they really try.
