An analysis on how Ishiguro alludes to underling circumstances at Hailsham in the book “Never Let Me Go”
For a large portion of the novel “Never Let Me Go” by Kazuo Ishiguro the real function of Hailsham remains a mystery. However, even from the beginning, Ishiguro alludes to the true nature of Hailsham. In doing so he provides both an immediate and gradual realization to the reader that something is not quite right. Ishiguro conveys this sense through the use of a select word choice and unusual environments. This novel gives very little to start with and very few meaningful details. But a keen eye can spot the key details that are given have been laced by Ishiguro with clues into helping solve the mystery.

There need to be a mystery in the reader’s head from the very start of this novel to play out like he wants it to. Ishiguro further adds to the mystery being formed on page four in the sentence “…I am a Hailsham student-which is enough buy itself sometimes to get peoples backs up” (Ishiguro 4). I find this very interesting. In real life people don’t typically introduce themselves as a student from something. Obviously being a “student from Hailsham” is important for the story development. Why would being a part of Hailsham “get peoples backs up”? This is something I see often in this novel. Essentially, the author alludes to something being wrong at Hailsham by making the reader come to that deduction themselves. He develops this through epically unique wording/phrases given the context that they are presented in. This is evident because of the multiple instances, such as using the words “donors, carer, and recovery” where we have such a little understand of what they actually mean that we are forced, in a sense, to try and make up our own reasoning and conclusion behind why what is being said, is being said.
