Could “Educating Students According To Their Natural Ability1” Come True?

What encourage me to write an essay on “Freedom Writers” is that Mrs. Gruwell treats each student as a real person instead of a learning machine. She made a great effort to understand every student’s interest and characteristic and taught them according to their natural ability. There are no two leaves which are the same in the world2. As a teacher, it could be “One student is not as same as another in the world.” Especially for Mrs. G, a first year teacher, was assigned to teach a special class which was full of “hopeless” students who must get into the classroom on a school guard’s command.

At first, Mrs. G taught them in a traditional way. However, it did not work at all. Because they had to fight a war for their racial groups and considered learning from the textbook was meaningless and unnecessary. Then, Mrs. G decided to walk into their worlds and open their minds. Adjusting measures to local conditions in education domains is really tough challenge. Nowadays, under the pressure on enrollment rates, many teachers adopt the cramming method of teaching. As the proverb says: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day6.” The meaning of education is beyond cramming knowledge into students’ brains. It should be helping students find their interests and gave them tools to fight for what they really want. Though educate students according to their natural ability with such a large population is an arduous task, we still need to find the solution to it. Teachers should find every student’s shinning point and satisfy their knowledge and spirit requirement according to their natural ability.
