I myself, am daughter of 2 immigrants from Mexico. I grew up in a house where we spoke only Spanish growing up. I went through similar struggles as Tan did. My mom spoke no type of English, so every time we would go out to eat or to the doctor’s I would be the one doing all the talking and translating. On the phone I would pretend to be her all the time, and I know my mom felt bad because she couldn’t help or understand one bit. As time went by she picked up a couple of English words but still not enough to keep a conversation going. Up until this day, I am still the one that speaks for her everywhere we go. As for my dad, he started learning English about the same time I did, so when I was around 5 or 6 years old. Even though he learned English he still has a strong accent, and it is very noticeable. He still has trouble pronouncing some words at times and I know its hard for him because he wants it to be perfect and wants others to understand him, especially when it comes to setting up business meetings or talking with customers. After reading this short story I realized that there is no such thing as correct English, that there are other people going through the same struggles as I am, maybe even worst. Some People are just ignorant and they don’t understand where people come from. A lot of people didn’t grow up with English as their main language, and its hard to learn a new language and be perfect at it. Categorizing people by the way they speak a certain language is not okay, it doesn’t make them any less of a person. In fact, some of those people with “broken English” are way smarter than what people think. Sometimes it is not about the way they speak it but about what they are trying to say and the meaning behind it. English is not broken; there is just different ways of speaking it. I think to my self and now and realize that there are millions of people who come from different countries and cannot speak English correctly. I now understand that we should stick together as a community and help those who struggle rather then bring them down and judge them, I know how they feel and it is not a pretty
I came from Mexico when I was 4 years, and like many of us I did not know English. Little by little I became fluent until I now can dominate English. Many people come to this country for a better life, but once in this country, we notice how essential English is for our everyday life. Being bilingual can be very beneficial for anyone in this country. I may be fluent in English, but I still prefer speaking in the Spanish language. This may be because at home that is all we speak. The article Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan is a personal look into how language, and the dialects of that language, can affect a person 's life. It 's a look into how the people inside the cultural circles who use dialect derivatives of a major language are treated by people who exist outside of those cultural circles. It shows us how society treats a person using a "broken" or "limited" dialect, and how society 's treatment of these people can also affect the children who grow up using these "broken" dialects. Tan wrote this article try and convey to the reader that English is a colorful, and ever-changing language that has many dialects. Tan makes the point, several times throughout the article, that society judges you based on the type of English that you use. Throughout the article, Tan uses both her mother, herself and society 's treatment of them as evidence to support her idea. The purpose of pointing this out is to show the reader that the language a person uses, whether it be taught to them in school or by a parent at home, isn 't indicative of a person 's intelligence or value, and they shouldn 't be judged as less for using it.

Language can defined the type of person you become and it has an influence on our choices as well as lifestyle. Language itself has become a way of seeing life in a different perspectives. Tan discusses the many ways in which language has played a role in her life and the result from it. I can relate to Tan’s experience to some extent because I come from a bilingual household too. My parents did everything they knew to help my sister and I learn and respect our Mexican culture. Born into American culture but raised by Hispanic parents, often was difficult for me. Since I was little I had to manage and balance two very different cultures at the same time. There were many times while growing up that I encountered complex situations in regards to language, whether to speak Spanish or English and when it was appropriate. I felt a lot of pressure having to act as an interpreter for my parents when we were out in public. At home I was told to speak Spanish so I would not forget, but at school I was taught to only speak English with my teachers and friends.
