In my lifetime many things have helped to shape me as a person and to progress my literacy on different aspects. One thing that helped me to become more literate in different areas was reading. Books helped me to expand on the lessons I was already taught by my elders. I used what I learned from these books along with the information I was given to work through situations. Although there are many books that have taught me multiple lessons one book that I always identified with and made me more literate in areas I did not believe as important was “ Among The Thugs” by Bill Buford.
Like most people I only got the book because it had a great cover that interested me more than the how-to and “i never made it to a big publishing house” books. When you first open the book you have all these reviews from various people and it makes the book seem like a book about some repugnant murders. Instead the book was about the supporters of Manchester United possibly the most well known Soccer team known universally. The first thing that came to mind was Nelson Mandela and his fight for equality and world peace. This first hand account of these supporters opened my eyes to the world of football support, support in an all around sense, acceptance, and the importance of morals.
One of the main points of Bill Buford’s book was about support. I understand support and what it means to be supportive so reading this book opened my eyes to the other ways that people are supportive. The fans of Manchester United are more than supportive to their team, they attend all the games and they have what may seem an addiction. They show this support by tattooing themselves with the team emblem and beating people to death who don’t agree with their views...

...ho you met stressed that they were not hooligans but devoted fans. It was this devotion that made them carry out the actions they did. It was also this devotion that made people see them for what the world saw them as. I myself am quick to judge so this book helped my literacy by making me more open minded to situations and viewing it for what it is not for what I want it to be.
This book has changed my life and my literacy for the better. The way the author uses his words and memories to create these raw emotions and narrating them. I learned things that changed my view on life and made me feel as if I had gained more knowledge. He taught the literacies he wanted people to understand through mostly subliminal messages. By reading this book I felt like I had better understanding of support, acceptance, and morals.
