After reading the novel The Book of Negroes, written by Lawrence Hill, it becomes clear that it should be analyzed through an archetypal lens because of the important archetypal symbols and themes that are present, such as symbolic archetypal characters and symbols.
Aminata’s journey is typical to that of a hero’s journey commonly used in archetypal literature, which helps develop Aminata’s character. In the beginning of the story Aminata is a young girl, who is stolen from her hometown, and sold into slavery. She says, “The men who had captured me had taken Fomba’s hare, skinned and gutted it and roasted it over a fire” (Hill 36), explaining what happened when she was taken.
