“You have lung cancer.” These are four words no one wants to hear! In 2013, 159,480 deaths due to lung cancer occurred in the United States. According to State of Lung Disease in Diverse Communities 2010, “Lung cancer survival rates tend to increase when the cancer is caught at an early stage.” According to X-Plain Patient Education, African Americans show the most common cases of lung cancer while Hispanics show the least. The lungs are two sponge-like cone shaped organs in the chest. The purpose of the lungs is to help one breathe. Oxygen comes into the lungs and travels through the windpipe. The windpipe (also referred to as the trachea) divides into two tubes called the bronchi. When a patient has lung cancer, the cancer forms on the tissue of the lungs, most often in the cells that border the air passages. Lung cancer occurs when cells in the lungs grow and multiply uncontrollably. This damages the surrounding tissue and interferes with the lung’s normal functions. Lung cancer is a disease which has two main types, four main stages and the causes, symptoms, and treatments of this disease have been well researched (Henschke and McCarthy). Firstly, there are two main types of lung cancer and four main stages of lung cancer. The two types of lung cancer are non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer (also known as “oat cell cancer”). Non-small cell lung cancer is more common than small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer usually spreads to different parts of the body slower than small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is more likely to spread to other organs in the body. Of the people who develop small cell lung cancer, only about six percent survive for five years. Some patients can develop lung cance... ... middle of paper ... ...r. However, other forms of treatment may also depend much on the type of lung cancer that is being treated and it's staging. Be it the more rapid growing Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) that makes up for between 10% - 15% of all diagnosed cases, or the more common and slower growing Non Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).
Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society. During 1995, approximately 2.1 million people in developed countries died as a result of smoking. One tobacco use is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the United States. Lung Cancer mortality are about 23 times higher for current male smokers and 13 times higher for current female smokers compared to a lifelong never-smoker.
According to “Medical News Today” cancer is a disease that is caused by an over growth of anomalous cells on one or more lungs. Cells often go up the air pipes which can cause difficulty to breath. Due to the over production of cells the tissue cells often begin to over produce; which results in tumors. There are two types of tumors: malignant and benign. Malignant tumors are the more dangerous of the two due to its invasive nature; which makes it cancerous. While benign is not invasive in other words non-cancerous. This is why cancer spreads to multiple areas and can be sometimes very difficult to fight. Cancer cells are abnormal not only because of their evasive nature, but also because of its irregular life cycle. Rather than expire like a regular cell, they continuously grow and duplicate which causes the disease to spread. This makes cell abnormal in shape and other qualities; known as a sickle cell. Due to the large growth and reproduction rate of the cells this makes the spreading of the cancer more rapid. Each cancer has specific symptom, for lung cancer the sympto...
Diagnosed with lung cancer, now what!? Time to do some research. Lung cancer is the number one cause of deaths in males and females. The causes, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer have advanced recently with new technology available to scientists and the medical profession. Lung cancer develops when the cells grow abnormally and tumors form instead of healthy lung tissue. It can take place in one or both lungs, normally the cells that line the air passages. Not all tumors are cancerous, the ones that do not spread are benign tumors. The more tumors that develop in the lungs will cause the lungs to work less efficiently. The metastatic tumors spread to other parts of the body passing through the blood stream or lymphatic system.
Among all Americans, the prevalence of asthma increased more than 60 percent between 1982 and 1994, especially among children. Deaths from asthma increased more than 55 percent from 1979 to 1992. Scientists suspect that increased exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke, growing populations in polluted city centers, and new housing that is poorly ventilated contribute to the increase in asthma cases.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer within the United States with tobacco smoking being the biggest risk factor. In 2012, more than 220,000 people were diagnosed with lung cancer and approximately 150,000 died from the disease. “Lung cancer rates in the United States climbed dramatically throughout much of the 20th century, as smoking became more popular, and peaked in the 1980’s before declining in the 1990’s” (Furlow, 2014, p. 298). Screening of high risk people for lung cancer has been extending patients’ lives with early detection with the use of computed tomography (CT).
Non-small-cell lung cancer is more common than small-cell lung cancer. It makes up about 80 percent of all diagnosed lung cancers. It is actually four different kinds of lung cancers that grow and respond to treatment in about the same way. These four types of non-small-cell lung cancer are termed squamous cell, adencarcinoma, large cell, and mixed cell. Two other related cancers that are also included in the non-small-cell lung cancers group are carcinoid and mesothelioma. Non-small-cell lung cancer grows more slowly than small-cell lung cancer. Non-small-cell lung cancer tends to grow first in the area where it started then invades the surrounding lung tissue and ribs. It eventually spreads to other areas of the body, mainly bones, brain, and liver.
Over a hundred years ago lung cancer was considered a very rare disease. Lung cancer is a disease that is known worldwide. Lung cancer is one of the four most common cancer. Lung cancer is detrimental to the Respiratory System and can cause permanent damage. Lung cancer is a tumor that grows in your lungs and it can also spread to other parts of your body. Early stages of lung cancer are hard to detect because it could take about a year for the tumor to grow to the point when you start experiencing symptoms. The most common cause of lung cancer is smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products. There are other causes like secondhand smoke, asbestos, and lung cancer is common in your family.Lung cancer has different risk factors, symptoms,
Lung cancer dates back to 1761 when it was called disease. In 1878 only 1% of the populations were thought to have it. When the 1900s came by that number rose to 15%. There was only 374 case filed by 1912. It wasn’t until 1929 when smoking became a factor in lung cancer. Fritz Lickint was the first person to tell the public about the dangers of smoking that which went into a campaign act to tell worldwide about the dangers of smoking.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in this assignment will be referred to as COPD; it is a term for collective chronic lung conditions

The East Pennsboro elementary school raised money for a statue at a local park. The statue was a ring of children that were holding hands. There was one child missing; the link was broken. The statue was dedicated to East Pennsboro students that did not make it to their graduation. My sophomore year of high school inspired this piece of artwork.
