America's Dropping of the Atomic Bomb The bomb was dropped for a number of reasons. I believe that revenge for Pearl harbour coinciding with pressure put on by President Truman to drop the bomb was significant. However many other factors were involved. These included political, military, economic, scientific factors along with Truman wanted to gain retribution for Pearl harbour. These factors along with others gave a number reasons for Truman to drop the bomb. President Roosevelt was the main man behind the bomb from 1941. At the Yalta conference in 1945, "the big three" met to discuss matters for Germany. Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt were the big three and in the next conference at Potsdam in August the situation had turned on its head as Roosevelt died, which was a big factor in the dropping of the bomb and Churchill had been replaced by Clement Atlee. Roosevelt's vice president Harry.S.Truman took over the helm. This was an overriding factor for the future to come as Truman was a war leader and was a very ardent, anti-communist and a simplistic man in his attitude toward opposition. Truman was an outsider to the Manhattan Project and knew very little until he became president. As soon as Roosevelt died Truman was put under increasing pressure from James Byrnes who was secretary of state and Henry Stimpson who was the secretary of war. Truman crumbled and dropped the first Bomb. Byrnes and Stimpson were crucial to his final decision of dropping the bomb and they really felt a threat from opposition as Byrnes said this about Russia in 1945: "Gentlemen, can I tell you what really worries me? Russia's influence in East... ... middle of paper ... ...ropping the bomb, which one can say, was clearly to show him self strong to the nation and put him in pole position in the forthcoming elections. There are many reasons that can be found for utilising the bomb, from the economic reason of the bomb costing so much to the military reasons, which was to stop the war. Also the political pressure put on Truman could be a factor. Also there were personal reasons for Truman, and for revenge on Japan for Pearl Harbour. All these factors and many more could be combined to the reason America dropped the bomb. So finally I believe there are a many of reasons for the dropping of the war, including spite and ignorance, as America wanted to show there supremacy in the world, by sending a big message to Russia especially, by carrying out the greatest scientific gamble in history.
