The American Revolution, which took place between 1765 and 1783, was the political uprising that caused the separation of the thirteen colonies and the British Empire. It formed an independent nation known as the Unites States of America. Although slavery was still expanding, America began earning its name, “Land of the Free” as it started granting people more rights, which included women’s rights, governmental changes, and land ownership. The Revolutionary War had a major effect politically on the Colonists, mainly the women. Prior to the war, women lacked all rights; they were expected to cook, clean, and raise families. However, after the revolution, women began to gain more rights. Women gained the power to be able to divorce their husbands if they chose to, something they never could have done before. “The expansion of the public sphere during the era of the Revolution offered women an opportunity to take part in political discussions, and read newspaper¬”(On The Equality of the Sexes (1790), 154). After the revolution women were allowed to join conversations that had to do with politics, they were given the right to educate themselves about the government by reading the daily paper. The right to own property let individual hold their freedom while still being able to keep their slaves, and although to slaves America was not becoming freer, to Americans having the right to own slaves made them believe that American was becoming freer. After the revolution women gained freedom due to the great impact they had while fighting in the revolution, the free government made the citizens in control in choosing their new leader and the right to possess’ property made it “legal” for individuals to own slaves. Although the expansion of slavery undermines the freedom of America, I believe that America was indeed becoming liberated due to the growth of women’s rights, the development of a free government, and the right to posses their belongings.

Many more decisions were made in England for the people of America without their opinions. Thereafter, the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, and the Townshend Duties were set and intended to help finance and sustain the British troops in America. The role of women in the Early Republic is a topic mostly overlooked by historians when dealing with this era of American history. The triumphs of the Revolution and the early events of the new nation were done solely by men. However, women had their own political societies and even participated in the Revolution. How can a newly liberated slave with no ownership of anything, uneducated and unrespected gain equality from the rest of society? The slave would then have no choice to work for their former master in exchange for shelter, food, and a low salary. The cycle of slavery and inequality continues, but in a different form. By setting people “free” legally we must understand that it is hard to expect society to do the same on a person to person basis. In response to the contradictions in the United States constitution, the constitution is clearly not as liberating as it seems. It is made up by an undemocratic society with the mentality of providing rights to favored groups. In order to promote true liberation, a new constitution with a more solid foundation of equality, specific rights, one that fits the contemporary society and must be ratified democratically. By forming a new constitution, it is setting an example to modern society that equality can exist. Since it would be ratified democratically, it would reassure its trust with society.

The American Revolution took place between 1775 and 1783 and was a fight for American Independence from England. In 1764, the first of many “Intolerable Acts” were passed. The British Parliament began to excise tax on the American colonies without representation, sparking the great conflict. The British were continuing to incorporate new ways to make more money. England was the most powerful country at the time with an intimidating military, so this wasn’t a hard task to complete. The American Revolution was very Revolutionary because, it jump started the abolition of slavery, it brought about many political and social advances, and served as a stepping stone towards a democracy and a strong centralized government.

A decade of conflicts between the British government and the Americans, starting with the Stamp Act in 1765 that eventually led to war in 1775, along with The Declaration of Independence in 1776. Americans united as one and knew that they wanted to be an independent country, have their own laws, rights, and not be a colony of the Great Britain. They fought hard for their independence and people lost their lives in the process of it, but in the end they succeeded.
