The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body of tennis. Established in 1881, the mission of the USTA is to “promote and develop the growth of tennis.” The mission statement serves as the guiding principle for all activities of the United States Tennis Association. The USTA is the largest tennis organization in the world. It operates with the assistance of 17 section associations, serving more than 665,000 members and 7,800 organizational members.
The USTA is managed by a Board of Directors which establishes the policies and objectives of the Association. The members of the BOD consist of 5 officers, the immediate Past President and nine directors-at-large. The voting members of the USTA are the Sectional Associations and Member Organizations whose voting strength is determined by the immediately preceding December 31st membership totals.
There are five main core values that the USTA organization deals with. The first value is integrity. The USTA is committed to the highest standards of integrity, honest, and ethnics. The second value is inclusiveness. The USTA actively seeks all people who play, watch , support, and enjoy the game of tennis into its events, programs, membership, leadership, and activities on a non-discriminatory basis. The third value is teamwork. The USTA's mission can be best achieved through the efforts of volunteers, staff, and alliedorganizations working as a team. The fourth value is excellence. The USTA continually strives for excellence and is dedicated to providing outstanding service and value. The last core value is accountability. USTA staff and volunteers accept responsibility and accountability for how their actions support the USTA Mission. The USTA core values constitute the fundamental beliefs of the organization. While goals present a clear direction, Core Values serve as the compass.
There are five main goals or objectives for the USTA organization to become better. The first goal is to increase participation in tennis so as to achieve the Vision. Increase USTA membership, make multicultural participation, and develop tennis programs accesible at all levels. The second goal is to build upon success at the US Open. Use the US Open as a promotional tool for the sport and help Americans reach the highest level of professional tennis. The third goal is to market tennis to the playing and non-tennis playing public. Enhance public awarness and perception of tennis and the image of the USTA. Provide educational materials and technical resources, and other tennis information to the tennis community.
