Ostlund CAFF 223 September 10, 2015 American Greed: Abstract & Critique American Greed is a television show that emphasizes certain cases in which big corporations in the U.S. have been affiliated with what is known as white collar crimes. The cases shown in this series involve a vast variety of common financial crimes that have a negative impact on regular citizens. The episode I had watched involved a man whose name was Kevin Trudeau, who was an author and was an infomercial salesman. Trudeau was also known as a convicted fraudster in trying to sell remedies involving diet, health, and even finances. During the early 19th century the market, economy, and communications began expanding rapidly. As these were developing and expanding there was a hunger for more. A hunger for more power and wealth. This starving hunger for more is known as greed. Greed poses the question “is greed good”? So , is it? Is a need or want for more, good? And if so, how? After analyzing and depicting articles about the 1800’s it is evident that greed is good, and here’s why;
In the case of the first poem, it was more of the perspective of a high class woman. The narrator who saw the women cleaning in the airport did not like the scene due to the fact that she believes that there are better jobs and options out there. As a woman coming from a higher class, she may think one way. However, we do not know whether or not the lady actually cleaning feels the same way. In line 16, Oliver mentions, “Yes, a person wants to stand in a happy place”, in a poem. But first we must watch her as she stares down at her labor, which is dull enough.” This quote goes to show that the narrator dislikes the fact that she is doing such a low job. Greed. Think of it as a ying-yang, there are two completely different sides to it, but yet they are so similar. Greed is bittersweet. When pandora lift open the box, she let out this character trait. This character trait, “Greed” was identified as “bad”, that is not all to it though. There is always two sides to something, two sides to every story, two sides to every situation, there is a victim, and there is the perpetrator. As humans, the goal is to strive for success, nothing can stop that. As humans, we are born into a greedy society, where everybody wants the best for themselves, nothing can change that. Personally, I believe the Civil War was fought due to land lust and greed and the differing ideology the Northern and Southern states had in regards to this. Jordan Belfort is the notorious 1990’s stockbroker who saw himself earning fifty million dollars a year operating a penny stock boiler room from his Stratton Oakmont, Inc. brokerage firm. Corrupted by drugs, money, and sex he went from being an innocent twenty – two year old on the fringe of a new life to manipulating the system in his infamous “pump and dump” scheme. As a stock swindler, he would motivate his young brokers through insane presentations to rile them up as they defrauded investors with duplicitous stock sales. Toward the end of this debauchery tale he was convicted for securities fraud and money laundering for which he was sentenced to twenty – two months in prison as well as recompensing two – hundred million in restitution to any swindled stock buyers of his brokerage firm (A&E Networks Television). Though his lavish spending and berserk party lifestyle was consumed by excessive greed, he displayed both positive and negative aspects of business communications.
Russian realistic literature thrived in the second half of the nineteenth century under the political and social problems that shadowed the country. In the early nineteenth century, Czars had unconditional power and paid no attention to the needs of the people, especially the serfs who were defined and treated as slaves. Revolts began to spread, however, and the serfs were eventually emancipated in 1861. This reform gave the Serfs equal rights and opportunities as free citizens, including the right to marry and own property. With exception to house serfs, all others received a small plot of land from the government. Most were unable to pay the unfair taxes that they were subject to and most ended up renting land from landlords that had once contacted serfs. This issue and many others during the time sparked an arrival of literary works that chronicled the era and emphasized new ideas concerning the meaning of life and happiness. Anton Chekhov, who was the grandson of a serf, and Leo Tolstoy who descended from aristocrats, came from completely opposite backgrounds in Russian society, but expressed similar beliefs in their literary works. “The Bet” and “How Much Land Does A Man Need?” both use character, irony, and symbolism to demonstrate the overall theme of human stupidity.
Often times, Americans do not realize the corruption that surrounds them in their nation. Capitalism is an economic and political system in which the country’s trade and industry is controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. Business owners, CEO’s, corporations, and large businesses have the propensity of taking extreme advantage of the power capitalism brings. For decades companies and corporations have been taking unexplainable benefit of the power they have. Capitalism in the Unites States leads to corruption.
Greed is the selfish desire to have more of something and taking any possible measures to obtain it. To this day, greed still exist in ourselves as citizens of the United States and therefore, in our government as well. It’s undeniable that we all contain at least a bit of greed within us; after all, greed is what keeps us motivated to work harder and help the world progress. But there are also some downsides to letting greed take control. Like the huge inequality gap America has between the rich and the poor. Not saying we should completely vanish greed from the United States(because it’s essential to progress in the country), but we should learn how to keep greed from taking over American society, because that will essentially break society
One of the most recent stories involving white-collar crimes in the United States involves the Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo is banking and a financial institution that offers financial services to very many people in the United States as well as around the world. As reported by the Washington Post, Wells Fargo as banking and a financial institution was involved defrauding its customers millions of dollars through their employees. It was reported that the employees were involved in the opening of close to 2 million bank accounts with Wells Fargo and proceeded to offer credit cards towards the same as a way of attracting the huge bonuses that were being offered (Merle, 2017). This case illustrated that there were real consequences to white collar crime. In addition to paying the fifty million dollar fine, he relinquished another fifty million dollars of his illegal trading profits. (He still had millions remaining, however, from his illegal gains.) His actual prison sentence was three years, yet he served only twenty-two months in the federal prison at Lompoc, California, which was known to have a “country-club” atmosphere.
Too many times in history has the government thrown aside the rights of the individual in the pursuit of their own agenda. This subsequently often led to their downfall as well. This happens far too often, even in our modern world. You would think that by now, despite all of the horrible things that came about as a result of these instances, we would have learned our lesson. But we still haven’t been able to get the message. Why? Because the power of greed is far more powerful than that of humanity. This has been visible since the dawn of man. Even though humans have a natural desire to care for one another, greed still conquers all, and that’s the sad truth of the matter. Unfortunately, governments take the greedy road far too often than they should. They get caught up in the moment and forget about what it’s all really about, which is fulfilling their side of the mutualistic relationship between them and the people. The one thing that we have in common is also the most overlooked.
An obsession of any kind is usually unhealthy, but obsession with money can destroy the soul. Karl Marx believed that human activity is paralyzed by the capitalist system. To be sure, the all-encompassing passion for wealth and power is unchristian, but is all capitalism evil? If the answer were yes, then abandoning capitalism, with its central goal of profit, would seem to be an obvious solution to the social ills of mankind. Of course, eliminating capitalism is not the answer. The fact is that capitalism, based on free competition without deception or fraud, can lead to justly obtained profits, while serving the common good.
