鉠鞟his paper I am going to critique the American flag as a cultural artifact. Flags can mean a sign of surrender, or a sign of victory. And the American flag is most definitely seen as a sign of the later. Growing up as an American, I’ve known this flag as been embedded into my DNA as an American. Living in America there is no way to escape it. This flag has been a relentless symbol of victory and freedom for millions of Americans over the last few hundred years. It has also been a symbol to the rest of the world of a new way of living. A way that a young new nation that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The act stated that, “Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation” (History Of The American Flag). “The name Old Glory was given to a large, 10-by-17-foot flag by its owner, William Driver, a sea captain from Massachusetts. Inspiring the common nickname for all American flags, Driver’s flag is said to have survived multiple attempts to deface it during the Civil War” (History Of The American Flag). The American flag as also inspired many songs to be written about it. After a British bombardment, amateur poet Francis Scott Key was so inspired by the sight of his eyes that he could still see the flag flying over Baltimore's Fort McHenry that he ended up writing "The Star-Spangled Banner" on Sept. 14, 1814. It officially became the national anthem in 1931 (History Of The American Flag). The flag has had man changes over the years since its conception.
